It's Baker and Ball

Danny Baker gets the Jonathon Ross R2 Saturday morning slot (hooray!) until Rossy returns late January. Danny will be with Zoe Ball. Good pairing? Discuss.

Wow - he's BACK BACK BACK.

that is almost brilliant news. Brilliant were it not for Zoe Ball, who will take up approximately 5% of the total airtime saying 'EEEERRRM', an annoying habit which makes here completely unlistenable to these ears. See also Sarah Cox and her slurpy noise.

The best bit is Danny Baker actually jokingly suggesting on 606 that he was more than happy to step in for Ross. Hopefully they'll make this into a podcast as well.

Except...

being Radio 2 he'll be allowed to play music - which makes the podcast seem bitty

stimpy | 14 November 2008 - 3:21pm

Well I for one

consider that to be a spectacular upgrade.

Lee Rimmer | 14 November 2008 - 3:18pm

Hat's on the side of my head!

Great to have the Bake back on national radio but with Zoe Ball?? Not too sure that will work - he works best with his regular crew - Amy Lame, Baylen Leonard and David Kuo. Any *one* of those would be good as a foil, not the 'zoo' format though.

stimpy | 14 November 2008 - 3:18pm

Better

but not as good as Mark Lamarr and Jo Brand - they're roughly 18 times better than Wossy and his obsequious sidekick.

Niks | 14 November 2008 - 3:21pm

100% good news

as long as David Kuo and his 6th form free market twaddle isn't allowed on air. Thought Zoe Ball was a "film producer" nowadays?

Chris G | 14 November 2008 - 3:37pm

That'll be the internationally famous...

...and respected financial journalist David Kuo?

stimpy | 14 November 2008 - 4:02pm

he still talks nonsense

even if someone in belgian thinks it's great it still nonesense.

Chris G | 14 November 2008 - 4:04pm

Nonesense (?) or not...

...he's a damned good financial adviser

stimpy | 14 November 2008 - 4:06pm

Yes like

It would be ok to clear fell the New Forest if it turned a profit.

Chris G | 14 November 2008 - 4:19pm

Sorry...

not sure what that's got to do with the advice and analysis that David Kuo gives out in his day job

stimpy | 14 November 2008 - 4:25pm

Juts one his

pronoucments on BBC London.

Chris G | 14 November 2008 - 4:41pm

Great News

apart from Zoe Ball

Pat Carty | 14 November 2008 - 3:53pm

In their wisdom

Radio 2 probably believe Zoe will attract a younger audience. However, give her a chance! Great news that the Candyman is on though.

Southern River | 14 November 2008 - 4:03pm

I never "got" Zoe Ball at all

There was some bizarre mass hypnosis happening at one point where she was in all the lads' mags being touted as some sort of sex symbol, whereas I always felt that if she was serving carrots in Tesco, most people would think, "aw, poor thing" (Actually I think the same thing about Kate Moss - maybe it's just me...)

Great news otherwise though!

Metal Mickey | 14 November 2008 - 4:44pm

Never got...

Amy Lame...never got her at all. He doesn't need a sidekick. He's the best broadcaster in the country. Closely followed by Radcliffe and Maconie.

Richie B | 14 November 2008 - 5:55pm

Agreed...

The best broadcaster (other than on Radio 4) and certainly the most entertaining.

I think he needs a sidekick off which to bounce ideas though otherwise he can get a little *too* self-indulgent sometimes

stimpy | 14 November 2008 - 6:03pm

Dr Kuo

He's the mediocre broker but he's in the know....

SirTerence | 14 November 2008 - 6:18pm

Bet you he plays...

'Kashmir' on his first show.

Patrick Crowther | 14 November 2008 - 7:45pm

Baker works well with anyone

The thing about Danny Baker is whoever he has as his sidekick, he brings out their characters and riffs off them brilliantly, so even if they're broadcasters who would be unexceptional on their own (like Amy Lame, Baylen Leonard and David Kuo), Baker somehow makes them great. See how he turns Issy Clarke into one of Five Live's highlights every Tuesday night. I have no doubt that anyone who's unsure about Zoe Ball (like me) will be pleasantly surprised.

CHerryHintonBlue | 14 November 2008 - 8:03pm

Zoe

I think she's improved/matured somewhat since the old ladette days. My more recent impression of her (eg Strictly Come Dancing) suggests so. She's all right I reckon.

Sven | 14 November 2008 - 8:20pm

I hope

it's better than his recent re-appearance on 606. It was dreadful (and I loved it when he did it 15 years ago).

Johan | 14 November 2008 - 8:22pm

Great news

I download these shows here in NZ and I am very pleased that Jonathan Ross has got the flick. A very funny man at times, but the show was a bit samey ("hold up - here's a story from the paper...") and his sidekick/foil seemed to be there merely to chuckle.

Coversely, Russell Brand's show will be missed because I think it was a one-off. The highlight being the on air banter with longtime friend Matt Morgan. This was not Smashy & Nicey-type banter at all. Full of Pinter, Clement/Le Frenais and Alan Bennett moments. It was if the third person (the anonymous listener) was fulfilling a silent role as counsellor.

The level of articulation necessary to carry off two hours of unscripted, freeform comedy is to be admired and it is a shame that Matt Morgan was not there when JR and RB took it too far.

Good to see Danny Baker in the slot, though - it is possible to listen to his 606 show without knowing a single thing about football. Hasn't quite reached the level of universal scorn dished out on Beadle (RIP) but I see him as a similar sort.
We should appreciate these people while they are still around.

Predictions for first record...

Hannah Jane - Hootie and the Blowfish

Cornwall Guy | 15 November 2008 - 12:59pm

Any Hootie

would be cool.

Lee Rimmer | 15 November 2008 - 2:00pm

I first heard Hootie...

when the Candyman played it on (I think) GLR. I ran out and paid a fortune for the album on American import. A week later it was released in the UK.

Then he did pulled the same trick on me with Counting Crows. £24.99 on US import the day after he played 'Mr Jones', a week later it was all over HMV for £9.99

stimpy | 15 November 2008 - 9:06pm

The Candy Man's first choice...

No, no, no, it will be Fountains of Wayne. Possibly 'Hey Julie'...

SirTerence | 15 November 2008 - 1:43pm

Hmmm...yes

or perhaps Red Dragon Tattoo?

Cornwall Guy | 15 November 2008 - 1:55pm

About...

...bloody time too...
