It's 2010 - What's occurring?
Posted by The Californian on 1 January 2010 - 2:02am.
So, another year, another decade - what was the first musical treat you gave yourself? For me - Pretzel Logic by Steely Dan from 1974. However, I am going to go bang up to date shortly with Fleet Foxes. Then, it might get loud.

Link Wray
I really enjoyed seeing him again on the BBC Guitar Heroes, and it was too long since I'd last reached for the Link Wray vinyl (a month or so), so first on the decks is "The Link Wray Rumble".
It has already got loud.
Good choice
Link Wray - Rumble - It Might Get loud - Jimmy Page - Interesting. I seem to remember LW on the Whistle Test and Bob teling us that Link had filled his speakers with nails or something to get the sound. That - and John Martyn on OGWT and his guitar 'effects' - always remember them.
Shadow Man
a 1971 outtake that The Dame eventually released as a b-side to one of the Heathen singles. Its ace
original demo from 14th September 1971
excellent...
How did I miss this in 1971? I was probably too busy with my hair. I actually turned off Ryland P Cooder to listen to this - good shout.
need I say
my usual thing?
Stillness and motion. Presence. Absence. Flawed. Perfect
Stepping back and drunkenly knoocking the Christmas tree over
That is fan- diddly-fucking-tastic.....I thought I KNEW my Dame. Good dog!
For fellow Dame-ophphiles
may I recommend Nicholas Pegg's rather brill 'The Complete Bowie' book which is a treasure trove of stuff you never knew and lies that they made up (no, probably all factual really). Bought a couple last year from the Borders closing down sale as Xmas presents.
Dame the man
Thanks for those. He really sounds like Van the man in the outro around 3.33
It's time for some old...
GLW tucked up in bed, so watching those flying Chinese laterns meander past (someone in the neighbourhood clearly bought a job lot this year) and time for some pure indulgence so listening to to Magical Mystery Tour by the 'Ballad of John & Yoko' Hitmakers.
Next up, the Spiritualized re-issue of 'Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space'...may even get into the 2 bonus discs. Rock on!
Ah Doc,
You obviously have a spottless mind. You should listen to The Wondermints. I have been listening to a lot of beatles-related stuff recently. Just keep going back.
Lanterns
I saw 8 "ufos" last night near Preston NW England, perhaps they were Chinese Lanterns!!
Shadowman
Was on a 'Dame' bootleg but i'd need to look for it.
'How it Ends'- Devotchka is currently waking the neighbours
I let iTunes pick for me
And it came up with Chet Baker - My Funny Valentine.
That'll do me.
For me it was this
I just 'discovered'
BSP recently. I bought Open Season - interesting and 'quirky'. I like quirky. We need more quirkiness. Anyway, I will be looking for more BSP material this year. Any suggestions?
If you've started with Open Season...
...then you've some real treats in store. If anything, Open Season is the weakest album of their three 'mainstream' releases.
Next I'd get 'Do You Like Rock Music?' which is their masterpiece, in my humble opinion. Then back to the start, with 'The Decline of...'.
Man of Aran is an instrumental soundtrack album, soundtracking an old film of that name. Less immediate than the others but still with some nice bits.
A compact little back catalogue but all good.
Thanks for that Paul
Suddenly, I have a new year resolution - Fopp, here I come!
Well, we were in bed by 11.30pm...
...on account of the boys (3 years and 7 months), but from around 10pm until then we enjoyed some nice violin as background music, and then some random stuff from around the music library. Ended on 'On the Planet Dog' by Boothby Grafoe, which is a surreal way to end the year.
First things I've listened to today were all Beatles; I (ahem) acquired the 24-bit/44.1KHz stereo remaster set from the USB stick and had a bit of an indulgent listening session on the sofa with the headphones whilst the wife and kids watched some cartoon or other.
My resolution for 2009 is simply to try to make more time to listen to the music I already have, and to selectively add good music to the collection rather than the scatter-gun approach I've taken in the past. I'd rather have a small collection of stuff that's all good (to my ears) than a large one full of hit-or-miss stuff...
