It's a Movie
Posted by Steve Turner on 11 January 2008 - 12:35pm.
Loved the It's a Movie article in current issue. A recent purchase threw up a classic to add to the list:-
Richmond Fontaine on the song Wilson Dunlop with the line: 'Can't stop thinking about Larry Jenkins, I heard he tied his wife to a sink pipe and left her like that for days'.
Something about this line makes me think of Charlotte Rampling in the Night Porter - its also very reminiscent of Raymond Carver.

Warren Zevon
Quite a few Warren Zevon's lyrics also read like plot synopsis.
Roland the headless Thompson gunner:-
"Roland was a warrior from the Land of the Midnight Sun
With a Thompson gun for hire, fighting to be done
The deal was made in Denmark on a dark and stormy day
So he set out for Biafra to join the bloody fray....".
and Werewolves of London:-
"I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain....".
Good call, Steve
Time marches on
Time stands still
Time on my hands
Time to kill
Blood on my hands
And my hands in the till
Down at the seven eleven
Gentle rain
Falls on me
And all life folds back
Into the sea
We contemplate eternity
Beneath the vast indifference of Heaven
Devoto
Howard Devoto is one of rock's great lyricists. How can you not want to know what happens next after this teasingly mysterious opening gambit:
"It's always raining over the border, there's been a plane crash out there, in the wheat fields they're picking up the pieces, we could go and look and stare" from Feed The Enemy by Magazine.
The Skynyrd - Gimme 3 Steps
I was cutting the rug,
Down at a place called The Jug,
With a girl named Linda Lu.
When in walked a man,
With a gun in his hand,
And he was looking for you know who.......
If you say it in a Bogart voice....
It was sometime after midnight
I was looking for a friend
My headlights lit her body by some pine trees on a bend
I slowed down right beside her
I turned the music down
She looked around then climbed inside
She didn't make a sound
