It's the bootleg podcast!

Our guest today was Mark Vidler of Go Home Productions, the man behind the mashing-up of Blondie and the Doors, Crowded House and Snoop Dogg, the Beach Boys and the Cadbury's Fudge theme and a great deal more.

Mark joins David Hepworth, Andrew Harrison and Matt Hall to talk about Paul Weller and private education, the Amy Winemouse video, the Kersal Massive versus Taz and Beefy plus the amazing "Baby Got Book".

Mark tells us what's involved in choreographing stylistic marriages like this one.
He's also kindly offered to have a go at mashing up any two records that you may care to nominate. If you know of two hot biscuits from different genres that you feel might somehow work together as well as these, why not suggest them below and he might give them a go for you?

Go here to subscribe or listen. Don't forget to join the Word podcast Facebook group. You can hear the new podcast below.

The Bootleg I'd like to hear...

Would feature Dan Keely, winner of the 2004 World Livestock Auctioneer Championship. He's like Taz, but so much better.

http://www.lmaweb.com/audio/2004.mp3 (and there's more here). You can even buy CDs of this stuff.

I'm not quite sure what you'd mix it with, though. Perhaps Cottoneye Joe. Or some bangin' drill 'n bass.

Fraser Lewry | 19 May 2008 - 8:47pm

Ce Ce Peniston & Sex Pistols !

"Finally,Did You No Wrong"

Downloaded this from the GHP site - what a corker !

Prefab Sprout and The Drill

I always thought the Sprout's almost acappella Mercy from Jordan: The Comeback would work well as a house track, so I gave it a go myself seeing as no one else was forthcoming.

http://eguinan.wordpress.com/2007/10/14/the-mercy-drill-prefab-sprout-vs...

Now, how about GHP give us some Enya and Motohead? On Your Shore vs Ace of Spades? "Ace of Shores", anyone?

daddyorchipsblog | 19 May 2008 - 11:58pm

Umlaut & r, plz...

That's "Motörhead" of course...

daddyorchipsblog | 19 May 2008 - 11:59pm

Chicane were great.

I still listen to Firebombs occasionally.

backwards7 | 20 May 2008 - 10:00am

Moldy Old Roll

The keys may not fit (my musical ear doesn't quite extend to detecting what key a song's in), but I would really *really* love to hear the unholy marriage of Lieutenant Pigeon's "Moldy Old Dough" and Status Quo's "Roll Over Lay Down". I think it might work, because Moldy Old Dough has a concealed slow-boogie rhythm about its person.

pvincent | 20 May 2008 - 11:25am

Hit me with your Abracadabra

might work - Ian Dury's hit me with your Rhythm stick and Steve Miller Bands Abracadabra I believe would go together okay.

Booker T and the MG's Green Onions with Canned Heats Going up to the country might also work.

The latest downloads on his site are very good by the way.

Steve Turner | 20 May 2008 - 4:11pm

My ideal mashup...

sorry can't bring myself to call it a bootleg - that's surely a live recording of Jethro Tull from Madison Square Gardens in '78

Anyway it has to be Nine Inch Nails' "Closer"

Vs (as i believe they say)

Los Del Rio's "Macarena". It's pretty much the same beat, and you can definitely detect a look of debauched ennui in their dead eyes:

simonperrins | 20 May 2008 - 5:09pm

But my favourite existing mashup...

Is The Kleptones mix of Bennie & The Jets and Rage Against The Machine's cover of The Stooges' Down on the Street. Totally awesome - i played it to a friend who thought it was some hot new band (and was horrified when he learned that Elton was partly responsible)

http://www.kleptones.com/music/24h/The%20Kleptones%20-%2024%20Hours%20-%...

simonperrins | 20 May 2008 - 5:13pm

Re: Guitar Hero

There's nothing in these games purporting to be something they're not. Cover versions are clearly labelled "as made famous by" as opposed to "by". I think there were only about two or three original tracks in the first game but by Guitar Hero 3 (once the brand had become pretty damn popular, seemingly not only with gamers but also guys in bands) it was about half and half.

Incidentally this week Rock Band is released in the UK. As well as a guitar controller you also get a drum and microphone controller. This will inevitably lead to problems with my neighbours as I practice my Geddy Lee shriek to Rush's Tom Sawyer

simonperrins | 20 May 2008 - 5:19pm

Mark could trying mashing our Reappraised Ones

For instance:

Gilbert O' Sullivan vs. Rolf Harris - "Sun Arise, Naturally"? "Three Little Claires"?

ABBA vs. Shakin' Stevens - "The Green Loo"? "This Ol' Trouper"?

Mike Oldfield vs. Val Doonican - Er. . ."Tubular Goat"?

The actual track selection would be best left up to him, I think, because, as he mentioned, the chances of two tracks chosen at random turning out to be the right key/speed/structure (although Mark doesn't baulk at cheating a bit on the structure sometimes - thought we hadn't noticed, eh?) are pretty low.

Archie Valparaiso | 20 May 2008 - 6:48pm

Indeed .....

Mark writes that he whipped out his electric bass on the aforementioned Ce Ce Peniston/Sex Pistols corker to improve the sound - and what a good job he made of it!

Hot Cider | 20 May 2008 - 7:25pm

Bad Penny Beatles

I'd like to mash up The Beatle's Lady Madonna and Humphrey Lyttleton's Bad Penny Blues

and The Beatle's Lady Madonna, I guess it may have been done already though!

David Wright | 20 May 2008 - 7:58pm

One song to the tune of another

This whole thread (and the concept which I reckon we should start to call bootmashing), it strikes me, is a fitting tribute to Humph in many ways.

So how about "I could have danced all night" from the King and I bootmashed with "The House of the Rising Sun".

Steve Riddle | 22 May 2008 - 12:08pm

Mash-Up

I'm saying Meat Loaf's Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad might sit nicely with U2's One. Call it OneLoaf. Or something.
BARNEY

barneytabasco | 20 May 2008 - 11:44pm

Mash-Ups? Haven't we kinda been here...

... before?

Nicodemus | 21 May 2008 - 2:16am

Bootleg suggestion

Not sure if it would work, maybe a bit too literal but how about Donny Hathaway's The Ghetto and Elvis Presley's In The Ghetto?

Dr.Robert | 21 May 2008 - 9:17am

Hmmmmmmm

do these boot legs or mashups bear repeat listening; after the intial shock/recognition factor they seem a little flat, none I've heard make for great tunes on their own, I do seem to be in the minority here. It's interesting that they have to be well know tunes to work according to ya man pointing them towards being novelties, good luck to you all though.

Chris G | 21 May 2008 - 9:39am

Try this one, Chris

It's by DJ Moule, another of my favourite bootleggers. He can be a bit obscure in his source material sometimes, but not here - I'm confident most of the Word bloggership will recognise the riff immediately.

The MJ/JB one posted here a couple of months ago is another keeper for me, as is GHP's "Paperback Believer". Both get regular play on my iPod as Dead Proper bona fide tunes, not just ha-ha-very-clever novelty jobs.

Soundhog

It's also worth lending an ear to some of Soundhog's booties - the Beethoven to Mak Vidler's Mozart.

His greatest hits
http://www.soundhog.co.uk/music_historia.html

A cracking Superchunk set - the Destiny's Child/Old Grey Whistle Test theme and Liberty X/Primal Scream section is genius
http://www.soundhog.co.uk/music_rsh2.html

And incredible 30 minute Crush Mix
http://www.soundhog.co.uk/music.html

Where Are You Bobby

My suggestions for the 'King of cut and paste Pop' to put in his bootleg blender are.

Vocal
Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues

Backing Track
Betty Boo - Where Are You Baby
Betty Boo - anything
Sugarhill Gang - Rappers Delight

If this doesn't work how about
Vocal
Talking Heads 'Once In A Lifetime'
Backing Track
Ian Dury - Reasons To Be Cheerful

Vocal
Beastie Boys - Fight For Your Right
Backing Track
Sly and TFS - Dance To The Music

Foghat

Minor point - Foghat were actually English - the rump of Savoy Brown - and were hardly "no hopers" - 5 gold albums and a best selling live album in 2006. All achieved by hard work too, I might add.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foghat

Not that I carry any particular torch for them, just seemed a bit harsh.

Twangothan | 21 May 2008 - 10:06am

"Rump"

Rarely has that word been more judiciously employed.

David Hepworth | 21 May 2008 - 1:50pm

30%

Well there were only 3 of them to start with and two are now playing the great gig in the sky...

Twangothan | 21 May 2008 - 5:57pm

A little off the wall, but....

How about this:

Join With Us by The Feeling:

mashed with Bus Ride by The Doodlebops (!):

I've always felt this was far too funky a song for a kids programme!

DivineMrsM | 21 May 2008 - 11:42am

DJ BC - The Beastles

DJ BC's - Beastles bootlegs made only from Beatles and Beastie Boys tunes and tracks is well worth grabbing if you can find them.

http://www.djbc.net/beastles/

Dave C | 21 May 2008 - 11:44am

How about...

You No I'm No Good by Amy Wine(m)house and My Sister by Tindersticks?

feelingsinister | 21 May 2008 - 2:23pm

I suggest

Beyond the opening riff, I don't know how compatible they are, but I would love to hear Bruce Springsteen's Badlands fused with The Animals' Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood.

Lucas Hare | 21 May 2008 - 4:43pm

Love Will Tear Us Together

Young Malcolm McLaren came up with one of the best theoretical mash-ups. Captain & Tennille's "Love Will Keep Us Together" and Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart".

As always with Malcolm the concept is better than the execution but if anyone has seen a good quality download of this I'd like a pointer...

PaulHThompson | 21 May 2008 - 5:24pm

Anne Briggs

If you want acapella the Anne Briggs compilation has loads of good stuff, deeply atmospheric, different to most other stuff. Maybe over a bit of dub reggae?

Twangothan | 21 May 2008 - 5:59pm

Planning a bootleg LP

I bet it's been done, so I'm almost too sheepish to suggest it, but what about "Let It Be" and "No Woman No Cry"?
Been done? Sorry. As you were.

I'd love to suggest something more quirky. It would be good to hear an answer song mashed with its original...

...or something misogynistic mixed with a not-to-be-messed-with female, such as Nina Simone.

Nick White | 21 May 2008 - 7:45pm

Another suggestion

Ruby Tuesday and Angel Of The Morning.

Lucas Hare | 21 May 2008 - 7:43pm

Thematic opposites

The Beatles' All You Need Is Love and James Carr's (You've Got To Have Something) Stronger Than Love.

Lucas Hare | 21 May 2008 - 8:08pm

Sugared Velvet

My vote goes to:

Track from Velvet Underground's I'm Waiting For The Man

Vocal from The Archies' Sugar Sugar

You are my candy girl, indeed...

BrianH | 21 May 2008 - 10:53pm

maybe I'm just twisted

but I thought "wouldn't it be nice to have a finger of fudge" worked really well.

And on that theme:
Smoke 'n Vac on the Water

- yes, that's the Shake 'n Vac theme vs Smoke on the Water. No, really, I think it could work...

Steve Riddle | 22 May 2008 - 8:31am

How about

Hamlet ad with Whiter Shade of Pale - could work well together I think?

Sven | 22 May 2008 - 9:52am

or

Whiter Shade of Pale with Air on a G String. No, hang on a minute...

Steve Riddle | 22 May 2008 - 12:01pm

A few for the 500 pot here...

Mink De Ville - Spanish Stroll
De La Soul - The Magic Number

Grace Jones - My Jamaican Guy
Amy Winehouse - You Know I'm No Good

Go Team - Panther Dash
Libertines - Time For Heroes

Surfaris - Wipe Out
Ramones - Sheena is a Punk Rocker

Well they work in my head...

PaulHThompson | 22 May 2008 - 9:30am

He is worth it guv

I reckon The Theme from the Sweeney with Jesus and Mary Chain's Just Like Honey would work. Especially if you weaved in what Bill Murray purportedly says at the end of Lost In Translation, in which the Caledonian noiseniks' tune predominantly features

Paul Holmes | 24 May 2008 - 12:18am

Or...

AC/DCs "Thunderstruck" under Amy Winehouses's "Rehab"?

The Lightning Seeds "All I Want" under "Bizarre Love Triangle"?

The theme from "Are You Being Served" under Aretha's "Respect"?

I'll get my coat...

samfid | 23 May 2008 - 5:02am

The Police versus Augustus PAblo

I'd like to hear a mash-up (sorry bootleg) of 'Can't Stand Losing You' by The Police and 'King Tubby Meets the Rockers Uptown' by Augustus Pablo. I was on holiday in Italy and between listening to my own copy of the melodica-vaunting dub classic on the in-car CD player and my brother's wife's CD of The Police hits I found myself humming Sting over the Augsutus Pablo backing track. Think it works tempo and feel-wise, not sure about keys.
It would be interesting to hear cod reggae and the real thing combined.

mikeyboyproduct | 2 June 2008 - 2:44pm

Joy Division v Freddie and The Dreamers

A Madchester classic, surely!
'She's Lost Control' by JD and 'I like it' by the Fredster. Marvellous.

mikeyboyproduct | 2 June 2008 - 2:46pm

JD v Freddie

Should be 'I'm telling you now.' 'I like it' was by Gerry and the Pacemakers.

mikeyboyproduct | 7 June 2008 - 3:53pm

Bob v The Gang

It may need something more up to date added for more funk but Visions of Johanna and Joanna by Kool & The Gang.

And 'We don't have to take our clothes off' - can't remember who sang it, mixed with anything by Peaches.

Si | 24 June 2008 - 10:20pm

Never mind all that

When do we get to hear the winning result?
