The most striking thing about this record

is that you can't imagine anything like it being made today. I don't mean in terms of musical style - surf rock was outdated by about 1964 - but in terms of mood. I know not everything's hunky dory in the country, or in the world, but it's a fine Spring day and I'm sure a lot of people are cheerfully looking forward to doing something fun with people they like. Having a good time. Rock'n'roll used to be about that; it used to capture that mood. These says it seems to be mostly about being miserable/ heartbroken/ alientated/ generally in bleak spirits.
