Island Life 50 - my night with Sly and Robbie

Steve Turner's picture

Went to the O2 Shepherds Bush last night to see Sly and Robbie, Aswad, Grace Jones etc. What a great party atmosphere. The night started off with a great set from Kid Creole. He is without doubt a fantastic live performer however the lascivious gaze of every male in the house was firmly in the direction of the stunningly sexy Coconuts. Worth the entrance price alone. I was transported back in time to the early 80's with lovely versions of Stool Pigeon and Annie (I'm not your daddy). Sly and Robbie came to the stage with the Taxi Gang and proceed to blow the place apart. The telepathy between these 2 stalwarts is mind boggling. Some truly seismic funky dub was followed by appearances by Aswad, VV Brown and the I Threes featuring Rita Marley. Naturally they covered No woman no cry but the emotional high point was the beautiful Redemption Song which was turned into a glorious anthem. Sadly Grace Jones only performed 2 songs but Pull up to the bumper in particular showed her to be a fantastic live performer and she certainly had the audience in the palm of her hands. A great night which will take some beating by the remaining shows scheduled for the rest of the week.

Two out of three aint bad!

It was a great gig.
I was by the stage door to the left of the stage. Marcia Griffiths and Erica Newall came down to watch Grace Jones I blew them both a kiss and they both returned my gesture it was a lovely moment. It will take a very special gig to trump last night. I saw Tom Tom club last year and they were on good form that should be a good one too.
