Is there a Yorkshire Massive ?

Janice's picture

Just wondered ? I'm near York and in reasonable travel distance to Leeds. Not the greatest at organising things, but just wondered how many of us there might be in the vicinity and whether it might be worth a try ?

I'm in Leeds

And I was thinking along similar lines. I can suggest suitable venues too.

Good luck!

Hope you get people interested- it's been (I believe, ahem, imho) thoroughly worthwhile for all of us involved in the North-West. You get to meet some lovely folk.

Grant | 24 August 2010 - 1:44pm

...and you

also got to meet me.

;)

It's well worth the effort. Grant started us off and coralled a handful for the first meeting but at the rate we're going we'll soon have a squad bigger than Man City's. As Grant says it's a chance for folk from different backgrounds with a shared interest and passion in music and other cultural flora and fauna to banter and exchange useless but interesting ephemera.

Or to put it another way I missed the last North West meet because I was on holiday and I was very sad to have to miss it. But I'd rather have that regret than the regret of not ever making the effort to have gone in the first place or of not responding to the initiative of Grant oop North and of course of Hannah - whom I've never met - in dat London who set the precedent for these Massive meets.

Yeah right...

there is the downside to it.

Na, you were missed old chum. The whole Massive meetings business could turn into something fab with visiting neighbour mingles. I would love to get to a London Town meet but my passport has run out.

I've heard

that all Londoners are legally entitled to claim a Northerner as a serf if one makes one's origins known.
Apparently Boris passed it secretly, and it's not been made public knowledge as they need the labour for the new Olympic Village.

As yet another proud member

of the NW Massive I would add my voice of encouragement to the chorus.Just do it.After many, many years of social purdah the GLW and I have found a wonderful bunch of delightful people to meet up with and share a night of jollity and frivolity.I now consider the NW Massive to be my friends. My only regret is that we only get to meet up now and again,if I could see these marvellous folk every week I would jump at the chance. So to reiterate just do it and if you do take piccies we would like to be able to put a face to a name,it's for the dossier don't you know.

We are Leeds...

I'm in Leeds and the excellent Adelphi Pub (excellent selection of beers, and food amazing - upstairs great for meetings and lounging!) - would be a great place for a massive oop north special I reckon!

Ooh

I live in York too! I got terribly excited to see it mentioned here. Though I'm far too socially awkward for a meet-up.

Aw, come on!

Word readers are lovely people. Word reader gatherings are splendid, friendly, welcoming occasions. Please consider dipping your toe in!

I used to live in Yorkshire

and actually, my two best mates still do. If you arrange a Yorkshire meet then I will do my very best to coincide a visit oop north!

Massive Meet Up

I live in Scarborough but would be up for a meeting in York or Scarborough as would Johnny The Fox I reckon.
I'd be pretty nervous too, it's a bit like a massive blind date I guess. Keep us posted!

David Wright | 24 August 2010 - 8:16pm

Blind date?

It is I suppose at the beginning as everyone starts to arrive with a copy of The Word under their arms and a whisper of "Are you with the Massive?" After a few hours of HORAs and drinks you will want to hug every man, woman and spouse that comes along to the mingle. We are that kind of people.

You know what...

Although I'm firmly in the North West camp, seeing as I'm actually an ex-pat Yorkshireman I might ride the TPE over and join you in whichever major city is selected to host the inaugaral event and bring messages of peace from your brothers and sisters at the other end of the M62.

Any major conurbation will do. The NW massive does go on tour having done MCR, Chester and Liverpool so far, so maybe the Yorkshire massive can take in Leeds, York, Sheffield, Goole, Barnsley etc.

May I suggest this website http://doodle.com/
to aid the tricky business of setting a convenient date.

Schedule a charabanc...

The next London meet's on the Sept 10th... thought it was worth a mention ;-)

PS thanks for the doodle recommendation, I'll give it a spin for the next London drinks.

Hannah | 25 August 2010 - 7:27am

Huddersfield

But I can get to Leeds or York, depending on shifts.

0
Olthwaite | 25 August 2010 - 11:40am

Blimey

I was beginning to think that I was the only shift worker on this site!

The lights must stay on.

0
jackthebiscuit | 25 August 2010 - 11:48am

What now then ?

Nice to hear from the NW and London people but particularly from so many of us actually in Yorkshire. York/Leeds seems to be okay for people but as I said I don't think I'm the best placed to organise something as I'm not a great socialite and would be hard pushed to think of anywhere suitable for a meet. Is anyone else prepared to suggest venues. Doodle poll might be useful - we've used them to organise things in work before.

0
Janice | 25 August 2010 - 1:21pm

Hull

I'd travel anywhere for the massive.... Keep me informed!
