Is there a song wierder than Madonna's Mer Girl?

tiggerlion's picture

I've been listening to Ray Of Light. Believe it or not, I felt sorry for Madonna because her latest foray into cinema has been panned mercilessly.

Ray Of Light is superb but the last track, Mer Girl, is as wierd as fish. I'm no Freudian, but it strikes me that her childhood might not have been exactly normal. Either that, or she has an extraordinary imagination

What's the strangest song you've heard?

1

The whole of Scott Walker,s "The Drift"

..every track sounds terrifying, as if it had been recorded in a 1930,s mental institution by the most dangerous man in there..and he,s coming for you!!

Thanks for this

I bought 'The Drift' when it came out. I think I listened to it twice. I don't remember it being as exciting as you describe. I'll dig it out & give it another go.

Depends what you mean by a "song"?

I remember hearing OMD's Maid of Orleans in 1982 and thinking it sounded brilliantly weird, right up until the 25 second mark when the "real song" starts:

Mind you, just a couple of years before, Laurie Anderson got to No 2 in the charts with this: goodness knows how

But if it's just "weird" you're after, then there's a vast landscape to choose from. My personal favourite is Steven Stapleton, aka Nurse With Wound. Here's something of his ("Strange Play Of The Mouth") which is slightly more like a song than much of NWW's other stuff:

Fleetwood Mac

Lizard People. Not to be confused with the talkie bits that seem to be compulsory on every Moody Blues LP to give the drummer some royalties.

that's

Baba O'Riley that is, listen to the bass riff

Mer Girl; it's not THAT weird! It's just a dream sequence.

Madonna's voice sounds lovely here.

I don't disagree

Her singing is at its best throughout the whole album. The lyrical content is bizarre, even as a dream sequence.

Now if it's weird you want

There really is only one contender. This is one of her more accessible and poppy moments (and also picked because plenty of her videos are NSFW)

(Diamanda Galas and John Paul Jones - Skotoseme)

Depends what you mean by weird

Just caught one of bbc 4's endless repeats of Totp and was stunned by Mr Big's 'Step back inside me Romeo she said. Step back inside me take me to your bed...'

Which ever way you look at it it's peculiar.
