Is this site slow

Mark JF's picture

or is it really, really, really slow? I have a 2 year old iMac with additional memory plugged into a reasonable broadband connection but everything on the site is slow to load, slow to respond, slow, slow, slow. It's been this way for a while, it's getting worse and I don't think it's my Mac. Fraser?

0

Slow?

Not at my end. Cleared your cache on your browser lately? What browser? Have you tried a different one?

0
SimonL | 16 March 2010 - 7:33pm

I even tried with Opera

and their turbo option, which is usually very quick. But our beloved Word site was still slow.

0
Mark JF | 16 March 2010 - 9:20pm

I couldn't even get the site to load at all

this evening, so in desperation I checked software update and there is an update for Safari [4.0.5]. I installed it 2 minutes ago and here I am.

0
ChaosandMorphine | 16 March 2010 - 10:43pm

Often very slow for me to

on the verge of hanging.

0
Chris G | 16 March 2010 - 7:39pm

Steady on!

Suicide is a bit of an over-reaction, surely?

3
DougieJ | 16 March 2010 - 9:23pm

It does take a while to load sometimes,

and it does seem to have got a tad slower recently. I'd put it down to my router arguing with the exchange (I've just changed to ADSL Max from a fixed speed contract), but maybe that's not the issue.

Have we overloaded the dilithium crystals Fraser?

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 16 March 2010 - 7:41pm

I've noticed this too...

my posts definitely take longer to load than they used to. Which on reflection is probably a good thing...

0
Patrick Crowther | 16 March 2010 - 7:50pm

Load times seen slower than

other sites.

0
Adman | 16 March 2010 - 7:55pm

I've noticed that

Seems to be waiting for some external services sometimes. "Track" seems to be slow most often. No biggie though, as they say.

0
Twangothan | 16 March 2010 - 8:01pm

It is intermittently slow

I've noticed in mostly during mid-early afternoons, evenings better. Could be for a whole range of reasons

BORING GEEKY STUFF ALERT:
If it's being hosted on shared hosting facilities, other servers may be getting hammered during working hours nd affecting performance.

If it's not on shared hosting, it may still be in a network segment that's taken some stick.

Could be running out of disk space/memory on the server host machine
Could also be the case for the MySQL server that's being used for Drupal
(but that probably wouldn't be intermittent but continual)

PS: Andrew Harrison may want to set his privacy flag to avoid us seeing his address in whois searches

0
illuminatus | 16 March 2010 - 7:58pm

It's pretty slow during my PST day...

...speeds up when you lot have all gone to bed though...

Interestingly FlagFox indicates it's actually hosted in the USA, Pittsburgh, to be precise.

0
nicktf | 16 March 2010 - 8:01pm

I agree

It has seemed slow today particularly

0
el hombre malo | 16 March 2010 - 8:12pm

Me too

10mb broadband and I've noticed it's got very slow lately.

0
Lunaman | 16 March 2010 - 8:14pm

snail's fart

here, work, different browsers, cleared cache's

must we throw this pop filth at our old phartes?

0
James Blast | 16 March 2010 - 9:02pm

know what ye mean JB

this was posted right after the above loaded

0
James Blast | 16 March 2010 - 9:04pm

2 mins

:(

0
James Blast | 16 March 2010 - 9:05pm

new

Glad I'm not the only one then. I have basic computer knowledge but it takes ages to log on to this site and to post as well. Happy now that its not just my computer

0
paintyface | 16 March 2010 - 9:57pm

It seems a lot slower

since the Latitude stuff was added

0
moleye151 | 16 March 2010 - 10:08pm

infuriatingly slow

in comparison to virtually all other sites - and worse than ever lately!

0
bargepole | 16 March 2010 - 10:42pm

agreed

I normally come into the site from google as I find it quicker than typing the address (never got used to using favourites, even after all this time), but tonight just would not load, checked other matches on the google page and they all loaded OK but this was slow slow slow, anyways, its always worth the wait......

0
art vanderlay | 16 March 2010 - 10:46pm

I thought

I had broken the internet. Lucky for me it was someone else.

0
Beany | 16 March 2010 - 10:53pm

Me too

I'm afraid. Thought it was the old lap top till it happened at work, then the paranoia set in that someone had blocked the old site even during the "social use allowed" hours.

0
Dave Amitri | 16 March 2010 - 11:00pm

I'm with Kylie

Slowness

It is very slow at the moment, especially early afternoons, and especially today. I'm not quite sure what the root cause is, but I'm working on it, eliminating possibilities one at a time.

2
Fraser Lewry | 17 March 2010 - 12:39am

What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itself.

"tis probably the Flash on the 3 Latitude ads.

Flash makes your computer work much harder - even when the download times ain't that big.

It's probably best to use just one flash ad and just use jpegs for the rest

(It says here)

0
Stuart Graham | 17 March 2010 - 4:43am

Not sure.

I have Activity Monitor running at all times on my machine, and neither processor or RAM is anywhere close to spiking when navigating this site, which suggests something at the server end to me.

There are a few sites which hog resources terribly. Facebook chat, for example, can sometimes slow my MacBook Pro to a crawl, with RAM and processor resources taking it in turns to peak.

0
Bob | 17 March 2010 - 6:41am

Seconded

I think it is server end too - no sign of my CPU peaking either and I can load pages from other sites and read them in the time it sometimes takes for a Word page to update

0
el hombre malo | 17 March 2010 - 7:11am

It's not the server

And it's not flssh. It's the database.

0
Fraser Lewry | 17 March 2010 - 7:14am

0
el hombre malo | 17 March 2010 - 7:58am

Aha

see 7:58pm last night.

0
illuminatus | 17 March 2010 - 3:47pm

One other(technical) note

when the db does fall over, you do get fairly comprhensive error messages - including full dumps of the queries into drupal (not good if someone wants to play sql injection on The Word site). I'd suggest tightening the PHP error_reporting level on a production box to remove them if your hosting setup makes it easy.

0
illuminatus | 18 March 2010 - 3:54pm

FWIW

Last night it wouldn't load at all, and my Firefox status bar said it was waiting for external content; I'm afraid I didn't take a note of the domain name.

0
Bob | 17 March 2010 - 6:36am

Please be patient

Fraser is doing what he can. But he is at a wedding in Chile.

1
David Hepworth | 17 March 2010 - 7:25am

"at a wedding in Chile"

Different context, different meaning and, in this case, presumably true but "at a wedding in Chile" has got what it takes to be the new "discussing Uganda"
I certainly intend to add it to my arsenal of excuses.

0
Richard Lowe | 17 March 2010 - 9:12am

Best excuse I've ever heard

and I shall be using it, too.

0
ElBombero | 17 March 2010 - 2:22pm

Most people would be

'Cooking chilli for a wedding'

Not our man.

Top leadswinging ruse, Frase. Keep it up, you're an inspiration.

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 17 March 2010 - 5:05pm

0
Pencilsqueezer | 17 March 2010 - 7:45am

Thanks to Fraser and David

for responding (especially as Fraser appears to be on t'other side of the world). For me, it's been this way for a few weeks so a few more days won't hurt.

1
Mark JF | 17 March 2010 - 8:01am

Oh, I wouldn't want you to think...

...I was having a go, for my part. I was just trying to provide information.

0
Bob | 17 March 2010 - 8:39am

Me neither

just trying to share info

0
el hombre malo | 17 March 2010 - 9:06am

Our Fraser

Is the new Michael Palin. He should have his own column.

The site has not been the same since the Mark/Kate video clip was posted so it must be their fault.

0
Beany | 17 March 2010 - 9:02am

It's very slow my end

I often wonder if I'm behind everyone else.

May I also be the first to welcome Middlerabbit to the site.

6
Albert Edward | 17 March 2010 - 9:14am

Best laugh of the day so far

And I can't seem to give you an up arrow.

Maybe the site is pining for Fraser's return.

0
fortuneight | 17 March 2010 - 5:29pm

Pining for Fraser's return!

Its bleedin demised

0
DogFacedBoy | 17 March 2010 - 7:52pm

1
Pencilsqueezer | 17 March 2010 - 1:44pm

0

3
Captain Underpants | 17 March 2010 - 8:39pm

0
Mark JF | 23 March 2010 - 9:17pm
