Is it time for a new political party (or non-party political movement)?

Remote Control's picture

Ahead of this weekend's March For The Alternative, do we need a new alternative, for those who have became irreversibly disillusioned by Labour, the banking crisis, the economic crisis, Iraq and Afghanistan, the Lib Dems under Nick Clegg... etc?

And if so what could/should they stand for?

Politicial parties

Why do we need political parties at all? Why can't we just elect people who represent us instead of people who represent parties?

I'm sure that is laughably naiive.

I'm rubbish at politics

I look at any party and can find a whole bunch of things I don't like. My ideology swings from socialist to middle-right depending on the topic at hand.

As a voting nation we vote on ideology and personality. If we lost the ideology piece (and I mean the clear label of whether you were left/right, pro/anti-Europe etc etc) all we'd be left with is a system of voting for the candidate with great hair who was never indiscreet at college.

I don't think most voters pay enough attention to the nuances of politicians, they vote for the big labels as defined by the redtops and broadsheets. Tell them to vote for an individual instead of a party and we would have an X-Factor government.

Can you imagine the voting program to find the prime minister?

The voting program to find the prime minister

Didn't we have that at the last general election?

Don't know if we need a new political party...

There is already a fair selection out there covering most of the spectrum - From the Communists to English Defence League.

But I do get a sense that "something" is going to happen. A general feeling that we can't go on as we've done any more and the current social/political structure has just failed completely in everyones eyes.

I sometimes think that Britain is like some 19th century central European puff pastry of a nation that is just waiting for events to sweep it away...

Do you think the winds of change

blowing through Egypt, Tunisia, Libya et al are going to make it as far as these shores?

Will we have had enough of

'let them eat puff-pastry!'?

I doubt it

as the police are probably too well equipped with tasers for anyone to seriously consider a bit of civil disobedience nowadays.

Time for Roderick Spode?

What we need is someone "swanking about in footer bags".

Great minds

I was thinking something similar - is it possible to have evidence based politics? It is something that is talked about, but usually only means getting evidence to back what you want to do. There are loads of universities studying politics - is it possible to discern what actually works, and apply that? You could call it the Practical party.
Do note that this would be mightily controversial, to both left and right, because there are all sorts of things that current parties are bonded to regardless of whether they work or not. Other things the public want regardless of whether it is a good idea - particularly in areas like law and order.
