Is it possible to "hide" YouTube comments?

Dr Volume's picture

Does anyone know a way to hide the cretinous comments section when looking at YouTube clips? They add absolutely nothing to the experience, and if anything they distract from your enjoyment of the clip and are usually just downright depressing to read. I'm convinced people go out of their way to find things they hate just to make ill informed comments about them. So if anyone knows of some sort of F**kwit filter that can be applied to YouTube do let me know.

I'm with you on this

those comments are beyond moronic, especially on the hip hop and metal clips.

I agree it should be possible to disable them.

Comment Snob

could I direct you to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/youtube-comment-snob/#con...
It takes a few seconds to install (Firefox only) and you can tweak it to exclude the majority of misspelt/badly-punctuated/moronic comments on Youtube, makes the whole experience vastly more bearable.

Yep

I use this. It not 100% accurate, but it's a big improvement on the natural order of things. YouTube used to allow you to hide all comments, but they stopped that with the new layout. Don't know why.

Alternatively, download Adblock Plus for Firefox from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865 then open preferences and add this rule: youtube.com##DIV#watch-discussion

Alternatively you could take this advice....

As when crossing Niagara Falls on a tightrope, or receiving a blowjob from your mother-in law.........just don't look down.

I'm surprised people allow them in the first place

I'm surprised people allow them in the first place: when you post a video you can select from auto-approving all comments, auto-approving comments from friends only or having it so you have to approve everything. I always go for the friends only route when uploading to youtube.

to get more 'hits' for their clip

I suppose, as more f*ckwits wade in to join the 'debate'. Presumably this is why YouTube don't let you hide them as perhaps it attracts more viewers than it repels. Thanks for the suggested solutions folks i'll give them a try.

YouTube F*ckw*t Filter TM R C

If you use the Safari browser on a Mac, you could try the "A Cleaner YouTube" extension, available from Apple's Safari Extensions Gallery.

This removes a lot of the clutter from YouTube, including comments.

I don't know if this applies to the Windows version of Safari.

You could try watching them in full screen

No moronic comments that way.

Install the greasemonkey add-on to your browser

if you're running Firefox, Chrome (not sure if this add-on works on Safari), and then load YouTube Enhancer from userscripts.org.

This allows all manner of tweakery with your youtube interface, including the ability to run all videos (and not just selected long ones) in theatre view.

For some reason I just can't help myself

Like rubber necking at a road accident. I was watching the Youtube of Adele's Brits performance yesterday and thought: 'I bet someone comments on her weight/looks'. I actually sought them out, though I knew it would wind me up. But I actually got more wound up by the standard of literacy, even in the pro-Adele comments. ('How cd sum1 say dat'.)

Very true

there is a kind of car crash fascination to the You Tube comments.

You want to look away, but it's all too easy to become hypnotized by the cobra's stare of fuckwittery.

Maybe I should just post back

"shut up! I'm trying to watch this"

You all missed the obvious one

Right at the bottom of the Youtube page.

Safety Mode. Click it to on. All comments disappear. It's tiny. Very bottom of the page.

If you have a GMail login, you can login and lock it. Then the kids can't turn it off again.
