Is it just me or has the page layout changed?
Posted by Diz on 9 January 2009 - 10:12am.
Create content and hot topics is now at the bottom of the blog front page but at the side for my own blog page.

I had a thought yesterday about the "NEW"
bit at the top of new posts. Would it be possible to have the new posts background box appear in blue while the rest of the previous posts stay grey? It would make it much easier to find new content.
It's probably
better to style the 'new' text to make it more prominent - your suggestion requires people to know what colour means what and to process that information each time they view a page - it's not intuitive. The idea of making new posts more prominent is a good one, though. I'll look into that.
RSS
works for me.
And at the side again when in an individual blog
I'm very confused
No change
There's been no change in the design. It's probably the browser you use reacting to something contained in one of the individual blog entries. What happens if you click on each individual post on the blog homepage? Do any of those pages break? Start with Archie's post.
Uh-oh
Have I inadvertently broken the cogs again? Should we maybe limit the number of embedded elements (as with YouTube clips)?
Naah
I think those Divshare objects are fine. I just picked on your post because it was the only one that featured anything out of the ordinary.
No - the individual posts are as before
It's just the main page when you click on "blog" on the menu bar. The posts look as before, there is blank grey to their right and the hot topics etc are all at the bottom.
Sounds browsery to me
Are you viewing at 100% zoom, Diz, or have a sidebar open? I sometimes zoom in and then forget to switch back to normal, resulting in the layout going squiffy on some websites.
It's the browser
It is something I find happens at work but not at home. I found the same thing happening months ago in my previous job as well.
False alarm
Closed and reopened - all back to normal.
Sorry everyone!
Ha!
It's the golden rule of IT. Turn whatever it is that's not working off, then turn it on again, before bringing it up with the support department.
On a related note...
...could we have the 'Track' button added to the sidebar along with:
STIMPY
My account
Create content…
My blog
Log out
Only saves a couple of clicks but, y'know...
Track
It'd only save you one click, but it's a nice idea. It's not easy to implement due to the way the menus are handled, but I'll add it to the to-do list.
Meanwhile...
Just set your Track page as your main bookmark for the site and then right click on the buttons on the top bar to open any other pages as separate windows.
As for new content, I just have "new" permanently in my browser's search window. It's not perfect (it picks up every instance of the word "new" in the reply headers and bodies) but it still saves a lot of time and effort scrolling to find the stuff you haven't read yet, particularly in long threads.
Ooo nice idea!
Maybe Fraser could replace 'new' with something a bit more distinctive? 'new post'? 'unread'?
Archie
Have you checked under your desk that the internet isn't leaking out of your broken bit, it's devil to get out of the carpets what with all the bile on the daily mail and guardian sites and the all the flesh tone ink from most the rest of the web.....
Right beneath you on my screen
is a quotation for an air-conditioning installation, being translated in stops and starts. You lot are the stops.
oh and another thing
no no it'll keep you get on with your translation it's not important.....
I hope
the word scorchio is used in there somewhere...
On the subject of layout
have you fixed or improved the number of posts on a page. I've been expecting the Prog Blog to go to 2 pages and therefore be annoying but it hasn't. Or is it just that prog stuff is allowed to go one endlessly?
The number has changed
It used to be 150 posts per page, now it's 250.
One day
I'll post something that gets that much interest. Squirrels or prog. Who'd have predicted those?
Funny you should mention squirrels...

Andrew Collins
Please don't read that link. It will all start again if you do.
OK
The 'new' text is now much more visible. You may have to do a forced refresh (CONTROL+F5 or Shift+F5, depending on your browser) to see the changes. Let me know of it's too much.
I'd say it's perfect
Nice work, Mr L. I'd been meaning to suggest doing something about making new posts more visible for a while now.
Much better
Now what else can I get my performing monkey to do for my amusement? :)
Hand held pleasure!
Is there any easy way of accessing the blog on a Blackberry? The website screen is unmanageable on the little screen unless there is some way of changing it I am unaware of. RSS just allows you to read things doesn't it - how about posting?
I have used my BB to view the word blog
but logging in was the pain - had to scroll all the way to the bottom to get the login. After that it was ok though.
Good question
I've never even seen the site on a Blackberry, so optimising a version for handheld devices isn't the easiest task to approach. I'll look into it, though - it obviously makes sense to get it working on smaller platforms.
Main thing
in layout terms seems to be if you have the layout in columns, it does the whole left column and then the right column. On the Word site it means you have to scroll past the blog entries to get to the log in bit. Other than that its ok really - and its better than many other sites. BB as a web browser is not a great experience. I nick my wifes iphone now.....
Just tried again
Just tried again, including /blog in the URL to save negotiating the main page - on my BB the fonts come out enormous - so half of the screen is the red headline of the post which is the biggest prob with the BB - also I'm using it over GPRS rather than wifi so downloading the images takes ages and also costs as it is charged by meg downloaded - I guess a very simple text based version sized for the screen would work faster, though I can imagine it is a pain to redo it just for the handhald. Anyway, I got stuck in one post then the BB chucked up a page error. Hmm. A mate of mine does development on handhelds - I'll ask his advice.
Tell you what though Fraze, I love the highlighted NEW - for our mega threadds it is so much easier to spot the new bits. Cheers!
