Internet radio - some tips please!
Posted by Simondrsmith on 1 January 2009 - 8:06pm.
Happy New Year everyone. I bought an Internet Radio for Xmas, a Pure Evoke Flow - a fine looking and sounding machine, and now I'm keen to explore the many stations that are now available. Does anyone have any recommendations for good radio stations? My ideal station is one that plays an eclectic selection of sounds I haven't heard for ages and new stuff I may well wish to go out and buy. I like rock, soul (but not contemporary R&B), electronica, and the Girls Aloud end of pop... pretty much what gets covered in the Word. Thanks.

Variety
For sheer variety you need look no further than WMFU.
Yep
WFMU. It's #1 on my pre-sets.
You two...
..can you get your station idents the right way round please - MF or FM??
Idiot
Sorry - I'm the idiot - unable to even check when it's actually linked on every Word blog page.
It's http://www.wfmu.org/
What's the best s/w player for a PC?
iTunes is rubbish at radio and ideally I'd like to be able to schedule a recording. Any ideas?
I tried this one, which works well with minimal tweaking:

I can get WFMU clear and strong using their 20K Windows asx feed, but even over a 2Mb ADSL line I still get the occasional buffering halt, which is annoying. This may be as much to do with my crappy BT account as anything else, so it looks like I have yet another reason to justify the cost of an upgrade to a decent ISP...
Thanks
Will give it a go.
3 Triple R
One of two Great Melbourne, public radio stations. Funded by Subscribers. A fantastic champion of local and live music. Some genuinely thrilling programming and great presenters- faves of mine, are the Sunday shows, Einstein a go go and Radio Therapy, Talk radio about Science and Medicine by proffesionals with an eye (or ear) for a killer tune. I am a subscriber and think you and other readers of this fine publication will enjoy...Always guaranteed a good bloody swear live on air too. Most refreshing..

Try
The Sound 100.3fm out of Los Angeles, lots of non single album tracks and pretty good guest djs, Beck had a go today.

WFMU is great but...
I find it a 50/50 ratio of fantastic and unlistenable - 30 minute droning soundscapes can be a bit wearing at times. The 'old 45s' week they had a couple of months ago was essential listening though, and their selection of Christmas records over the past few weeks has consisted of a lot of songs I've never heard anywhere else.
On the more 'indie' side of things I enjoy KEXP in Seattle (playlist here - http://kexp.org/playlist/playlist.asp )
and , when it hasn't mysteriously fallen off the airwaves, Little Radio ( http://www.littleradio.com/ , playlist at http://www.last.fm/user/LittleRadio/tracks?page=1 )
Agree with Barney about
Agree with Barney about WFMU, but when it's good it's excellent. Mr Finewine's Downtown Soulville show is excellent, full of funk and soul rarities and well known stuff
I also listen to WWOZ http://www.wwoz.org/ quite a lot - a community based radio station from New Orleans, who mostly play music from the local area: blues, jazz, soul, you name it.
I have been considering
I have been considering buying an internet radio, but can anyone confirm if you can pick up Last fm on one?
Last FM
It's not available through the Pure website as far as I can see.
Folky
For all manner of folky stuff www.folkalley.com is great. Spans everything from real traditional stuff to Blackmore's Night. Also FIP from Radio France is a fine station.

KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic

Although I just noticed the excellent Nic Harcourt has left and they used to have some really great sessions, still available in their archive.
I'm not sure how good it still is with the new bloke though.
Festive 50 on Dandelion
Dandelion Radio, is a station set up 'kind of' in the great Peel's image...and they are the ones 'chosen' by the production team (presumably the late lamented hermeet and louise) to 'broadcast' the annual chart...they repeat it all on a loop so you stand a decent chanceof hearing what you want, its quite good..
Thanks everyone
Further recommendations welcome. I've enjoyed WFMU so far but can see that the soundscape novelty might wear off after a time.
