Instrumentals

Was having a discussion in the pub last night about the lost art of great instrumentals in pop music - oh yes, me and my mates really know how to make the most of an evening out - and I was pointed in the direction of this from the Ralfe Band.
Do you know of any other new bands doing something similar?

That scares me.

I think the Earlies

I love instrumental music

In fact a higher and higher percentage of the music I listen to nowadays has no words. I can lose myself in a Tony Allen or Fela Kuti set and Manu Dibango hits the spot most days.
I'm also fond of a bit of The Atlantics and the occaisional smattering of The Shadows. There's lots of stuff associated with Quantic which is wordless and great and there's a whole new generation of awesome instrumental funk bands like the New Mastersounds and Lefties Soul Connection.
Give me a tight bassline over a poetic turn of phrase any day of the week.

I've plugged this before ...

... on another thread - and it isn't new - but if you love instrumentals and you don't own it already, please check out the compilation of Joe Meek recordings called 'Vampires, Cowboys, Spacemen and Spooks'.

2CDs of tracks that all sound a little bit like 'Telstar' (including 'Telstar'), and they're all brilliant.

As for current bands, if you like some heavy riffing, please try the Capricorns - especially the new CD 'River, Bear Your Bones'.
