James Blunt 'prevented World War III'

His bloody records

are still too great a price to pay.

If you read the story

the most amazing thing to me is that he was commanded by Michael Jackson!

His music leaves a lot to be desired..

but he is a braver man than I am. I got the fear just reading what his army duties entailed. That said, I am a coward.

I don't particularly rate his music but

completely respect him for what he did whilst serving his country. I know *I* couldn't do that.

He genuinely seems like a nice, rooted, guy with a clear perspective on the somewhat 'Marmitular' appeal of his music and the ability not to take himself too seriously. I suspect that having a few people tell you your music stinks is no great hardship after active service.

What happened to

The other 108?

Made me

laugh!

But...

...would World War III have prevented James Blunt?

Man of the moment

He's getting discussed a lot on here and elsewhere on teh Interwebs.

I hate his music. But he seems like a decent person, and he has a lot more life experience than most of the people who claim to hate him as a person. I thought that story about WWIII was rather interesting.

I can't stand his music

but every time I see him speaking on the telly I've been impressed. He is self-deprecating without sounding conceited with it. He is amusing and has a natural gift for a one-liner or a pithy aside. His lack of self-importance is particularly endearing. He was also very good on HIGNFY the other week, managing to more than hold his own as well as providing a thororughly welcomed verbal slap to the face of the smug and pompous Nick Robinson. The fact that he rides the punches of criticism of his music with such grace and wit makes him arguably the least annoying mainstream celebrity on the planet. If he ditched the singing he'd be perfect!

He did look a little

odd though didn't he? But your points above remain correct.

Yes he did

look a bit odd. His face had a weird sheen on it as if someone had mistaken it for a wall and brushed sizing all over it. Perhaps it was some kind of bad hangover meets harried make-up artist last minute green room malfunction.

Make up

by Pixar. And a decidedly unfortunate quilted leather jacket.

Target market 15 year olds…

… and taste impaired rock journalists. Yes in all fairness to the guy, when you see him interviewed and on HIGNFY you can see why, in a world full of aspiring singer/song writers he's got as far as he has. Not the music though, clearly.

I seem to remember a "100 Best Songs" compilation where in a desperate attempt to find anyone to say anything positive about the whining dirge that is "You're Beautiful", the program makers found a certain Mr Hepworth. Who was dutifully heard to utter words along the lines of "its just a great song, going to be remembered 50 years from now". Strange thing taste isn't it.

It is a good song though

We've just heard it too many times.

*Cowers. That's Take That, Keane, Snow Patrol and now Blunty I have defended here.*

They've all sold more

records than the rest of us, so they must have something. Sounds like a great line up for next years Latitude Festival.

You go to be kidding, right?

Thats the thing, its not a good song. Its far from a good song. The melody, the lyric and the overall effect which is one of bland whining overconfidence. A bland "hook" doesn't make a good song. More reminiscent of cynical 80's money-spinners churned out by Cock, Aitken and Waterman than anything else.

Subjectively

its a good song. I remember thinking, when it came out, its rather good. I would also add that any song with a hook is likely to be on the good side - hooks being the gold dust that songwriters mine.

James Blunt

One decent song no not that one and a decent human being

0
MrRadio | 15 November 2010 - 1:42pm

I rather suspect he's one of those artists

who engender a knee-jerk, "Bland MOR" reaction but who'd surprise a few folks if some of his songs were released under another name.
