Inappropriate?
Random i-Poddage again tonight and Illegal Alien by Phil Collins (sorry, Genesis) arrives with its jaunty rhythm, sunshine melody and lyrics including the ones that follow;
Keep your suspicions
I've seen that look before
But I ain't done nothing wrong now
Is that such a surprise?
I've got a sister
Who'd be willing to oblige
She will do anything now
To help me get to the outside
Now, is that unnecessary, or have I succumbed to the dreaded PC monster?
Anyone else think of lyrics they've known for years that suddenly seem, well, a bit risque in today's social climate, but that you wouldn't previously have considered to be anything more than poor poetry?

Under My Thumb
is pretty unpleasant.
But nothing beats this ode to swinging, by George Jones and Melba Montgomery :

Not Really
The whole thing is done with an certain air of irony don't you think?
Not
sure. I think I'm with Lucas. The thing is, I'd taken the song for granted for so long, then suddenly it dawned on me; this is Collins' era Genesis.
Tracksuit loving, wad-waving Detroit hoodies celebrating (?) their ho's, yes.
Swiss living, cheeky-chappie and pal of Mike's Mechanics, no.
Life is, indeed, stranger than fiction.
I think
It's done pretty much dead straight. But it's early.
Brown Sugar
Wouldn't get away with it today. Unless 50 Cent did it, then it would be ok.
Stray Cat Blues
Filthy. Why not just turn this into a Rolling Stones thread?
I hear the click-clack of your feet on the stairs
I know you're no scare-eyed honey.
There'll be a feast if you just come upstairs
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
I can see that you're fifteen years old
No I don't want your I.D.
I can see you're so far from home
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Oh yeah, don'tcha scratch like that
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Bet your mama don't know you scream like that
I bet your mother don't know you can spit like that.
You look so weird and you're so far from home
But you don't really miss your mother
Don't look so scared I'm no mad-brained bear
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh, yeah
Woo!
I bet your mama don't know that you scatch like that
I bet she don't know you can bite like that.
You say you got a friend, that she's wilder than you
Why don't you bring her upstairs
If she's so wild then she can join in too
It's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Oh yeah, don'tcha scratch like that
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
I bet you mama don't know you can bite like that
I'll bet she never saw you scratch my back
Free and Lizzy
I find I can't listen to many Free and Thin Lizzy tracks now with their horrible mysogenistic lyrics - "woman I'm gonna getcha" etc. And lots of old blues songs are pretty awful too, lyrically. Much as I love the music itself and they're very much of their time. I'm not even particularly PC, they just grate a bit now.
Art Lover
Don't think Ray Davies would get away with this one today.....
Art Lover - The Kinks.
Sunday afternoon theres something special
Its just like another world.
Jogging in the park is my excuse
To look at all the little girls.
Im not a flasher in a rain coat,
Im not a dirty old man,
Im not gonna snatch you from your mother,
Im an art lover.
Come to daddy,
Ah, come to daddy,
Come to daddy.
Pretty little legs, I want to draw them,
Like a degas ballerina.
Pure white skin, like porcelain,
Shes a work of art and I should know
Im an art lover.
Come to daddy,
And Ill give you some spangles.
Little girl dont notice me
Watching as she innocently plays.
She cant see me staring at her
Because Im always wearing shades.
She feeds the ducks, looks at the flowers.
I follow her around for hours and hours.
Id take her home, but that could never be,
Shes just a substitute
For whats been taken from me.
Ah, come to daddy, come on.
Sunday afternoon cant last forever,
Wish I could take you home.
So, come on, give us a smile
Before you vanish out of view.
Ive learned to appreciate you
The way art lovers do,
And I only want to look at you.
Yeah, that's dodgy as hell...
but the lines...
I'd take her home, but that could never be,
Shes just a substitute
For whats been taken from me.
are rather good when viewed on their own.
Stones (again) & Elton
The lyrics to the Stones' "Some Girls" wouldn't be acceptable today.
There's some pretty bilious lyrics on the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album I think (Jamaica Jerkoff, Dirty Girl etc.), though it's a while since I heard it.
Nothing as bad as the Ray Davies lyric quoted above, though - that's utterly vile. Was there ever a time this was considered to be at all acceptable? Unbelievable.
Take a hint, Bruce
I was listening to Bruce Springsteen's Fire this evening: there's no way that these lyrics would get out today. To make it worse, he's DRIVING:
I'm driving in my car
I turn on the radio
I'm pulling you close
You just say no
You say you don't want to
But girl, I know you're a liar
No, Bruce. You must respect the lady's right to say no and watch where you're going.
I think Illegal Alien might be a bit of a sore point...
...if you check the inlay of the old CD version of the "Genesis" album, those lyrics have mysteriously gone missing. There is also a lyric "Over the border, there lies the promised land.." but the second half of the line has also vanished..which is.."When everything comes easy, you just hold out your hand." Something tells me Another Day In Paradise was Phil's atonement. Did the rest of us have to suffer along with him though?
What,
you don't like Another Day In Paradise?
But... but.. why?
Permafrost
Song by Magazine has line 'I will drug you and f**k you on the permafrost'.
That can't be justfied can it?
Don't Knock it....
....until you've tried it.
Yours,
Eskimo Joe.
