Imelda May And Her Band
Posted by DogFacedBoy on 19 November 2011 - 4:25pm.
When:
18th November 2011
Where:
Reading Hexagon (home of rock)
Comments:
I'm fair delighted for Imelda and her band that she has gained a sizeable chunk of success lately via her own music and her appearances with Jeff Beck. Her blues holler and growl is strong as ever tonight but what often gets lost is how shit hot rocking and vital her band are to her success, particularly live. It would be unfair to single anyone out but Dave Priseman on trumpet, percussion and extra guitar gives the sound and extra kick whether sweetly on the ballads (beautiful playing on "Kentish Town Waltz") or blasting brass on a rollicking 'Go Tell The Devil'. Imelda originals sit nicely amongst top drawer covers of the Everly Bros. 'Temptation', Howlin Wolf's 'Spoonful' and a sweet 'Baby, I Love You' accompanied by bassist Al Gare on uke. Supremely confident and wickedly funny, Imelda gave Berkshire a rockabilly night to remember.
The Audience:
20 to 60-somethings that are very enthusiastic. A few glammed up rock n roll style. Couple of TOWIE clones behind me with their "Shut Up"'s and "Oh My God"'s complaining that no-one else was dancing like a dickhead. Like, whatever, yeah?
Food & Drink:
Being a provincial all purpose entertainment venue (last night Tony Benn, tomorrow Steeleye Span) there were drinks and maltesers galore!
It Made Me Think...:
That whether in front of a sold out 1500 capacity venue like tonight or to three men and an Irish wolfhound in a pub, Imelda would be giving out the same infectious enthusiasm and passion.

I was there and thoroughly
I was there and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Hexagon needs a significant makeover - it has seen better days. Gents toilets are very tired.
As to being a general all purpose venue - Tony Benn is performing in the Town Hall tonight - different venue across town. I love ice creams in the interval at Reading - reminds me how cinemas used to be before the pick n mix/hot doc marketeering took over
Sounds like a great show
I love Imelda - does she still play Tainted Love live? I really love her energy and the basslines on Johnny got a boom boom are bloody marvellous.
Yep still plays Tainted Love
and her boom booms are all in the right place
Sleepy lagoon
I am loving the concept of tired toilets.
love her voice
I had the pleasure of seeing her live with J Beck last year. And I enjoy her last album. A truly wonderful voice and artistic talent. Such a cut above all that X Factor celebrity driven crap.
