I'm Going To Sit Right Down And Write Myself An E-mail ...where are the songs about mobile phones?

Tony Donaghey's picture

As the Dear Santa letters and Christmas Cards are being written it got me wondering if there are any songs about mobile phones, e-mail and myspace. I'm sure there's some scope for drama in a song about modern communication but does instant messaging have the same ring as Hanging On The Telephone or Please Mr. Postman do you have a letter in your bag for me or I read a blog today oh boy. Has Telegram Sam become Mobile Mick or Carphone Carl.

Just shows a clever songwriter...

...can turn anything to his lyrical advantage. Finally got a couple of Rufus CD's this weekend (Want One and Two - £2 each secondhand) just had a quicke listen in the car but liking them so far.

Roger McGuinn's

'Carphone' from "Back From Rio" is the only one I can think of off hand. From the early days of mobile communications, it features a cameo from the ditzy receptionist from the Twin Peaks Sherrif's office, which does date it slightly.

Not actually about mobile phones, but...

To my knowledge, Goin' Mobile by The Who has never been used in an advert for mobiles, yet it's the kind of song you'd think an advertising agency would leap on. Maybe Townsend won't permit it.

Lancashire Hotpots

Met A Girl On Myspace

They also do songs about Ebay, mobile phones, firewalls and sat nav. Typical subjects for simple 21st century Lancashire folk.

Super Furry Animals

Wherever I Lay My Phone (That's My Home) from their Guerilla album is amazing; manic and completely bonkers.

Search it out if you can.

I love the way they uses that 'nokia tune' in it

The little classical guitar part that nokia use as ad jingles and ringtones appears right through the song, with typically great super furry squelchy noises.

Cell Phones Ringing (In the Pockets Of The Dead)

From Streets of New York. Which is rather good.

Virgin Killer

All that fuss about Virgin Killer - a song about an aggravating lack of network coverage.
