As the title says: Its payday for me on Tuesday I'm going to buy an album. Which should I get? I want the massive to guide me.

Peace and Love

Where to start.

Any particular style, predilections or caveats to bear in mind ? Or is it a free for all.

My immediate recommendation

As I've been playing the hell out of it in the past couple of days, is Bon Iver's 'For Emma, Forever Ago' (if you haven't got a copy already, of course).

Rob Pook | 24 October 2009 - 12:03pm

Charlotte Hatherley 'New Worlds'

I've just ordered it myself after hearing

lisbon | 24 October 2009 - 12:07pm

Know you probably bought something else entirely

... but my copy of this arrived today - big thumbs up on first play.

Hey Grandma!

You'll need more than 1 payday to get the utterly far out and brilliant Moby Grape debut, sadly.

There seems to have been yet another SNAFU over ownership of their catalogue, and the Sundazed remaster of the debut from a couple of years ago is no longer available except via opportunist bread heads, man, taking the veritable on Amazon and Gemm. They do seem to have some copies left of the later albums, but it is the debut you want.

Far better to pay less than 8 quid for the double CD 'best of' called Vintage that's on Columbia.

this is easy

the answer is Richard Hawley's new album. Easily his best yet and a rare thing these days a new album you need to play in order end to end preferably on a stereo. It sounds great, he sings great and the words are good too! Oh and in this age of vanishing record shops you will probably be able to buy it in Tescos!

At risk of over egging the pudding

if you haven't heard "What Is Love For?" by Justin Currie it really is worth a go. (Thank God, or Fraser, there's no more negging)

1
Dave Amitri | 24 October 2009 - 12:52pm

OK

you are Derek Hameetree and I claim my 10 shillings.

I recommend "Wilco (The Album)". Hard to imagine anyone with Massive-leanings not loving this.

0
Rufus T Firefly | 24 October 2009 - 1:01pm

Seconded

Justin Currie, that is. Absolutely stunning album, bought after daveross posted a song on another thread (ta Dave). Maybe not the best one to get if you've just split up with someone, though, he's not exactly full of the joys of spring...

1
David Cooper | 24 October 2009 - 2:10pm

Good choice

0
Uncle Wheaty | 24 October 2009 - 4:28pm

Free for all, anything goes,

Free for all, anything goes, but I doubt I'll be buying any Napalm Death.

Liking the Wilco recommnedation one of my mates is really into them so may be time to tap them up.

FYI stuff that I have enjoyed recently are The Knife, Fever Ray and The Big Pink album

0
gelectrox | 24 October 2009 - 1:04pm

... So why not borrow your friend's Wilco

and buy something new neither of you have heard before?

0
lisbon | 24 October 2009 - 1:33pm

The obvious choice would be

Chuck Prophet's latest, ¡Let Freedom Ring! but I think it's unlikely you'll find it in a record shop. But you might be lucky.
Chuck previews the album here:

http://chuckprophet.com/video/

0
Carl Parker | 24 October 2009 - 1:19pm

Also,

I recently got hold of David Byrne and Brian Eno's 'Everything That Happens Will Happen Today'. If you like their groove, then I can certainly recommend this. I think they described it as Electro-Gospel or somesuch, and it's really rather good.

RobertC | 24 October 2009 - 1:33pm

I Got The Album By These Guys...

...and its never been far from my player.

0
Tony Donaghey | 24 October 2009 - 2:00pm

The XX album

is an absolute must have.

0
Gauntlet | 24 October 2009 - 2:14pm

Mos Def - The Ecstatic

I think this is still my favourite album of this year.
Inventive hip hop with various styles of backing.

0
badger_king | 24 October 2009 - 2:28pm

Two ..

XX by The XX
Primary Colours - The Horrors

0
busker_du | 24 October 2009 - 4:21pm

Madness?

Unless you already have it, try 'The Liberty of Norton Folgate'.

This could be your last chance to feel smug when all the 'best of the year' lists come out...

0
Lando Cakes | 24 October 2009 - 4:35pm

Seconded.

One of the very best albums I've bought this year.

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 24 October 2009 - 4:52pm

Cool as Folk!

Here's the Tender Coming by The Unthanks is a splendid piece of work

2
Vince Black | 24 October 2009 - 4:52pm

The Unthanks

Bought this on recommendation of others on this site and agree it's excellent but then again so is the Madness album.

0
Los Aromas | 25 October 2009 - 8:22am

Robert Pollard - Normal Happiness

On constant rotation around these parts at the moment.

0
masked tortilla | 24 October 2009 - 4:57pm

I am going to recommend an album

that is 42 years old and was recommended by Rob Fitzpatrick of this parish via Twitter

It is called Ballad of Birmingham by Jerry Moore

Jazzy/Folky - kind of Tim Buckley/Ritchie Havens/Terry Callier territory - but unique with a sensational voice

Sample it here
http://bit.ly/wp1VZ

It's about 5 quid on i-Tunes - leaves money for soemthing else

0
Sheev | 24 October 2009 - 5:03pm

thanks, sheev

I liked that, I shall put it on MY list of things to buy

1
badger_king | 24 October 2009 - 7:54pm

High Wide And Handsome

by Loudon Wainwright III.

It's a 'double' and utterly brilliant.
If you like concept albums about obscure banjo players from the 1920s.

0
Adman | 24 October 2009 - 5:33pm

If there's a Fopp near you, just go there.

I made my first visit there for a couple of months and came out clutching three funk compilations, and the DVDs of State Of Play and Short Cuts.

£23. Still can't quite believe how cheap it was.

0
ganglesprocket | 24 October 2009 - 8:49pm

Definitely liking the XX ,

Definitely liking the XX , Wilco and The Madness recommendations. I might buy all 3

0
gelectrox | 25 October 2009 - 2:01am

Choices

If you want a 'new' cd, I second the Unthanks - a really strong album, stands up to repeated listening. But if you want a recommendation of one you should buy anyway, 'kind of blue' by Miles Davis - the most accessible jazz album and one that fits any mood.

0
el hombre malo | 25 October 2009 - 8:30am

Buy a gig ticket instead

You like the Fever Ray cd so buy a ticket for her last ever show on December 5th.If you haven't seen her yet the show is spectacular.
But if you want a cd The XX is fab but also try the joyous racket that is the Fuck Buttons " Tarot Sport"

0
Churnster | 25 October 2009 - 9:07am

But can any "grownup"

really buy a disc by someone called "F*ck Buttons"! I mean really you'd need a sherry and sit down afterwards and you'd not be able to catch anyone's eye in saloon bar later on....

0
Chris G | 25 October 2009 - 4:55pm

Also "loving" the Madness

Also "loving" the Madness album. Can also recommend:

The Voluntary Butler Scheme
Duckworth Lewis Method
Pugwash compilation ("Giddy" I think)

Currently absorbing the Bad Lieutenant album - Quantick's review in last month's issue sums it up perfectly.

0
eddie | 25 October 2009 - 2:50pm

hmmm

I definitely want to agree with the suggestions of the unthanks new album:

http://open.spotify.com/album/5cjGqK4W16mMeo3VZzSi2D

(I haven't listened to the new madness myself yet but the word from the word is its well worth it too)

but I would also like to suggest a few other relatively new releases (in no particular order):

A Larum by Johnny Flynn: http://open.spotify.com/album/1EyH35lAZ4XnrvDJgLDs4B

Pram Town by Darren Hayman and The Secondary Modern: http://open.spotify.com/album/7lWrLa2xMY4OYj4csVjTTt

Prinzhorn Dance School by Prinzhorn Dance School: http://open.spotify.com/album/125QyULA03CrxVPKINCD1T

Peaceful The World Lays Me Down by Noah and The Whale: http://open.spotify.com/album/6Cl4Kx4Po6VGO0OKcAAgBk

12 Crass Songs by Jeffrey Lewis: http://open.spotify.com/album/7JKbgS4XwOWguTokJ4EDi7

It's Not Me It's You by Lily Allen: http://open.spotify.com/album/3xYU4UDQVYfIvTLQUKblQ2

Vampire Weekend by Vampire Weekend: http://open.spotify.com/album/6Jhr0EbCw2ue3V50dQYeYg

Made Of Bricks by Kate Nash: http://open.spotify.com/album/1Kp3ZBXNInjAS615BOWV9s

That's the stand out albums I have come across of the last few years. I can't choose ones out of the rest of music history its too immense and wide.

However if you want a good album by an unknown artist I recommend Hollowbody's 8-track album Inside the Wolves http://www.myspace.com/songsofhollowbody

and it seems weird not to recommend something by one of my own music projects, just cos you asked, out of the stuff my bands currently have available (rather than things to come) I'd have to recommend you buy something from http://www.myspace.com/themiddleclassbastards We're a bargain too, 2 CD's for £8 including postage. I know to do so is a bit cheeky but its not like I'm not suggesting a load of much more successful competition first!

0
goosefat101 | 25 October 2009 - 3:35pm

So what did you buy ?

We're all on tenterhooks here...

1
el hombre malo | 28 October 2009 - 11:35am

Once again

Carl P has stolen my thunder with the suggestion for Chuck Prophets new album - it really is very good and gets better with every repeat play.

However since I cant suggest that one try the new Soulsavers cd - excellent with a mixture of styles - some Spaghetti Western type stuff, 60's pop and MC5 stylings. Also, if you live anywherenear London buy it from Rough Trade - I was visiting London and had determined to visit Rough Trade for the first time - they are selling it with an exclusive bonus cd of extra material. A proper record shop with pioneering ways about them. What is the world coming to??
