I'm enjoying The Premiership this season, is it just me?
Posted by Dave Amitri on 12 November 2010 - 9:32pm.
Chelsea have the best first 11 but an average squad, the circus surrounding Man City and Liverpool, Fergie trying to solve the Rooney conundrum, Avram Grant slowly turning into Inspector Dreyfus, Ian Holloways press conferences, Allardyce, Pulis and McCarthy finding new ways to blame the ref. Top of my list though is the mishapes, mistakes and misfits that make up Newcastle Utd including their monster of a centre forward Andy Carroll (pictured) who could be the future of English football or another modern footballing accident waiting to happen. And to think I was going to give it all a miss this year, I can't wait to see what unfolds this weekend.

this year/last year
As a long time Tottenham fan, I have to say I enjoyed The Premiership more last year than this year. But at least there's the Champion's League to enjoy this time around!
They'll pick up soon though
They'll pick up soon though in the league!!
Think I Agree,
Although of course my focus of attention is on a lower division. But the GLW, being a rabid Spurs fan, keeps me up to date on higher matters.
If ever the hegemony of the so-called Big Four is to be challenged, I think it's going to be this year. I'm not sure about Man City and think that they flatter to deceive, I await Liverpool's inevitable gallop up the table with interest, and let's face it, Manure and the Arse aren't playing particularly well, are they?
Newcastle do indeed have the opportunity to mix things up a bit, but then so too have West Brom. Even Stoke, for Christ's sake, have tripped up the big boys.
I think what I'm trying to say is that this season could be the most open in years and if Spurs learn how to bring their Champions League form to the Premiership then I think we really could see some shocks.
Ever the optimist, eh?
NUFC
I've enjoyed Newcastle's resurgence. One particular highlight has been Joey Barton, who up until Wednesday seemed to have turned over a new leaf (ever present in the side, setting up goals, ignoring provocation...etc).
Blackpool have certainly lit
Blackpool have certainly lit the place up - and Newcastle to a lesser extent - but you have to say it already looks like the same two at the top.
That won't change until next year when the boys from London SW12 return to their rightful place quite close to the summit of football.
Just to point out....
This would only be the second year in a row that we've had a Man U-Chelsea top two.
Yes but
it would also be the fifth out of the last six seasons that those two finished first and second...
09/10 - Chelsea / Man Utd
08/09 - Man Utd / Lpool
07/08 - Man Utd / Chelsea
06/07 - Man Utd / Chelsea
05/06 - Chelsea / Man Utd
And the "Big Four's" average positions over the last ten seasons are:
Man Utd 1.8
Arsenal 2.6
Chelsea 2.8
Liverpool 3.8
who be dat?
Okay STD my friend, eduacate me. Which team is from London SW 12?
QPR with Bernie Eccleston in goal
Like Uncle Wheaty Said
QPR. Actually much of the credit for our current run goes to our keeper Paddy Kenny. And the enforcer Shaun Derry.
Trust me, it's like this every week:
forest away
tricky one tomorrow - last time i went there, we were well beaten 3-0 and relegated from the premiership
Dunno about every week
But it's certainly like that every time you play us. I think we had a different monarch the last time we won at QPR.
I was sat right behind the goal when that one went in.
Oh, that is lovely.
But my favourite goal ever is Ronnie Radford's. You know the one. Bloody poetry, that.
From the year of the great grass shortage
SW12?
Is this Balham (gateway to the south) we're talking about here?
*Cough* W12
Funny, on my visits I always thought I was standing in SW12. Surprised I ever found my way there and back...
And I thought
you were talking about Balham Blazers FC.
Cool badge!
*idea* if every team's badge burst into flames when a player tried to kiss it that might teach 'em...
The Stoke v Birmingham game
was 100 times more entertaining and exciting than the Man City v Man Yoo game this week.
As a Man City fan
this season is a trudge to the promised land of the Champions League. One more season of dross to suffer before the Rapture.
Stoke v Brum and several other games have kept my love of footy alive in the meantime.
My head tells me to dislike Spurs but they are the most entertaining team win, lose or draw. Can't stand their fans though....
Spurs
Yeah they're great to watch, particularly Modric and Bale.
Also Being A City Fan
City are too negative for me under Mancini, as a neutral it's great to see the three promoted sides doing so well, there have been many exciting games and unpredictable results, but it is still the same three at the top as last season
Also Being A City Fan
twice
For City to reach the CL.....
....it looks like being a battle to the wire with Liverpool despite the latter's bad start. I have a statistical model which currently says that 65 points will be enough for fourth. This can of course change as results come in but this is how it now stands.
What is perhaps more interesting though is that the improvement in City's fortunes on the European Club Ranking we make at work was almost all achieved under Mark Hughes. Since his departure and Mancini's arrival, they have pretty much stood still.
You've mentioned this model before, Simon
- I'm curious - who does it see going down this season?
Wigan, Wolves and West Ham...
...at the beginning of last week. Two games played since then so this may have changed by the time we run it again on Monday. We're also currently sprucing up the website and these predictions should then be on there. I'll post the link again once it's looking good as long as Fraser doesn't mind the self promotion.
Blackpool aren't out of the woods yet either although we had them on 8 more points last week than the same model predicted at the beginning of the season.
cheers
Good to hear a City fan tell it like it is
I don't want to watch City play again all season. They've taken the entertainment out of football. Awful to watch but if it gets you into Europe fine, but I won't be watching.
Having said that
it is nice to see a City team that can actually pass the ball to each other, even if it is just across the defensive line!
I can only watch Final Score from behind the sofa
Maybe other Happy Hammers are doing the same this year?
I must say that Scott Parker's goal
against West Brom the other night caused me to emerge from behind the sofa for a while.
These days I live 6,000 miles from the action...
... and yet I can still watch 3 live games on a Saturday morning, a taped game in the afternoon and a live game on Sunday morning thanks to Mr. Murdoch & his Fox Soccer Channel and Mr. Disney (who owns ESPN). Then there's the live midweek games like last week. There's hardly enough time!
Interestingly, Chelsea have been featured every week this season so far. It must be a conspiracy.
Would enjoy it a bit more
if Wolves weren't languishing in 19th. It's been nice receiving plaudits for our performances against the big 4 recently, but unfortunately the points tally doesn't correspond with the displays.
Regarding Dave's comment on McCarthy, I would argue that Super Mick has been refreshing this season in that he hasn't whinged about some abysmal reffing. On Wednesday against Arsenal, he had the perfect opportunity to get on his high horse about double standards when Fabregas escaped with a yellow card for a challenge that would have surely warranted a red if it had been carried out by one of his own. Then we would have to put with Wenger sermonising for the rest of the week. Instead Mick accepted it was part of the game and that was the end of that.
Similarly, he didn't make a great fuss when our Algerian international Guediora got his leg broken by a Steve Sidwell foul.
I might criticise him for some of his tactical decisions, but I think he shows a refreshing honesty when speaking to the press.
Double standards?
What about when you had Newcastle at home? Karl Henry should've been sent off about four times.
Cobblers
You seem to overlook the fact that Henry's tackles on Barton weren't actually fouls. Hansen and Shearer on MOTD called them great.
The one he eventually got booked for was a very questionable decision and was more to do with the Newcastle players whinging at the ref.
Double cobblers
I watched that game live and MOTD missed out two or three of the worst fouls in the game; two elbowings on Barton went unpunished and unshown on the telly highlights. Hansen and Shearer are both shockingly poor pundits, so to hold them up as arbiters of fair play and justice is pretty rich.
Ah well
If Hansen and Shearer said so, it must be true.
totally agree
Mick is refreshingly honest. I'm sick to the back teeth of the so called big 4. What annoys me most is that when Wolves beat City it was all about City's inadequacies. Or is that me being paranoid?
Truth of the matter is that Mick is not a Premiership level manager. His tactics leave a lot to be desired. And some of his signings have been woeful. If I was Steve Morgan I'd want a word with him.
Yes, it's more entertaining than usual
Which I suppose is largely down to some apparently random results, even though the teams responsible (Blackpool, WBA etc) have deserved it. But there is one drawback - it's playing havoc with my fantasy team.
I've discovered a great way to make football more entertaining
I don't look at the scores during the day.
As long as it's been possible, I've kept up as much as possible from 3-5pm, so I pretty much knew of every goal being scored as they went in. This season, if I know I'm going to be in to watch Match of the Day, I don't bother, and it's brilliant. WBA's win at Arsenal the other week was one of the best moments of high drama I've seen on television for ages (especially when they went 3-0 up).
So, yes, I am enjoying The Premiership this season. I'd recommend my approach; in fact, I'm hoping one day, a sitcom might make an episode about it...
Take it a step further.
Go to the bookies. Place an accumulator on every Premiership match that day & watch MOTD in ignorance of the scores. I was only successful once, but the excitement as each game unfolded was unbeatable.
Chelsea 0
Sunderland 3. To paraphrase the Scottish poet Andy Gray "It just gets better and better!"
It was good, wasn't it?
Not sure what I enjoyed more on the telly this weekend. Watching England put Australia to the sword at Twickenham yesterday or Chelsea getting ripped to bits today. Jordan Henderson is rapidly turning into something rather special. We needn't worry about who'll be doing Gerrard's job when he hangs up his England boots.
Shudder
Gerrard's job being disregarding any team instructions and doing what he likes?
Disrespect?
It's a popular cliche now to say "No disrespect to.." before making an unflattering remark.
A caller to 5 live has just produced one of my favourites, saying picking Carlton Cole in the England squad is "a waste of an England shirt", and then "No disrespect to Carlton Cole".
Think the levelling out
and proliferation of shock results is due to the fact that Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal. Man U are all pale shadows of their teams of yesteryear which have done well even during the Premiership era
Spurs are a breath of fresh air the way they set about it - and I'm a Blackburn fan, spanked 4-2 at the Lane yesterday
Ok Harry has had money to shell out but compare and contrast Spurs' expansive style with Man City and their negative, over-cautious approach - their fans can come to Ewoood and watch Big Sam's no-frills percentage-based functionality if they are beginning to question the high cost of putting that side of theirs together and of buying tickets to watch them
Don't despair Wolves fans - you're well capable of a few wins from what I've seen but you'd better get cracking soon
Anyhow, let's hope for a few more upsets and occurences of the big boys getting beat in unlikely circumstances at home - if it doesn't speak highly of the quality of the very top sides at least it gives us little guys a chance of a shout
Championship for me...
being a Reading FC supporter, but I am enjoying seeing Blackpool play as it takes me back to when the Royals had their first ever season in the "top flight". Nobody gave us a chance despite the fact that we steamrollered the Championship with a record 106 points to get promotion and then ended up a couple of points way from the UEFA cup places. So I'm really hoping Blackpool can stuff the pundits opinions and stay up, especially as they try to play decent football (unlike Man City for example...)
Ian Holloway's appearances on TV are fantastic, I particularly loved his recent "Don't Tell Him Pike" moment when, straight after a game where he made about 10 changes, he threatened to resign if the FA were to fine him for fielding a weakened team!
Well,
there's another hell of a weekend. First time in Premiership history that all teams scored in the same weekend. Last minute winners, sendings off, penalties, missed penalties and Berbatov scoring 5. Pretty good I'd say.
