If you think life isn't fair, try sport

David Hepworth's picture

You practice and practice and practice until you get to the pinnacle of your sport. Then they make you play *this* bloke.

I like this for three reasons

1. pure skill
2. the fact that the commentators (and presumably Federer's opponent, who is still powerless to react) know exactly what's coming
3. The look of bemusement on Dabul's face

I dislike it for one reason:
1. The commentator's use of the phrase "Standing O"

Murray will have him ...

... maybe.

In contradiction of the FAQ I know...

...but surely that should be 'practise', David?

Fantastic

Now if he could just sort his head to head record against Nadal out, he really would be the best ever :-)

I don't think he's got anything to prove

Head to heads notwithstanding. Murray also has a better head-to-head record against Federer; would you suggest this implies Murray is superior? I think not.

For the record, I think Nadal is a phenomenal player, but Roger's haul of titles, and his manner of winning those titles, speaks for itself. He is undoubtedly the greatest player to ever grace the game.

Other occasions when sport isn't fair

Phil taylor playing darts, the look of resignation on his opponents face is painful to watch

Phil Mickelson played a shot from behind a tree, out of the pine straw at The Masters and left it 2 feet from the pin, Lee Westwood visibly wilted.

It's also how most of us feel when Backwards7 or Captain Underpants posts a new thread!

Hey Dave, don't put yourself down

- that's our job :-)

I know

my place.

I wonder if he loves playing tennis...

or has an overbearing father like Agassi?

Whatever... the man has a special talent for whacking balls.

If I tried

that shot I would end up whacking my balls.

I'm guessing here..

But I think we can say with a fair degree of certitude that every teenaged boy who sets foot on a tennis court over the next few days is going to have a go at playing that shot. And a goodly proportion of them will end up rolling around in agony whilst clasping their jacobs and realising suddenly that there are some things best left to Le Fed.

Doesn't the commentator say...

..."that's the kind of shot you can try if you've got twins"?

Roger Federer as Religious Experience

From a link provided on Something For The Weekend a couple of weeks ago:

Incredible

I think the whole reason we watch sport is to see great athletes 'in the zone' because it sort of puts the spectator 'in the zone' as well.

I'm not a great fan of tennis, but I feel that Lewis Hamilton is well on his way towards Federer levels of brilliance in F1.

Let's hear it for the girl

Francesca Schiavone did one of these in the last round of the US Open, evidence below. I love this woman: when asked recently about her fans, she said "They're attracted to me because I'm beautiful!" Her smile when she won the French Open this year was genuinely heart-warming and life-enhancing.
