if all blacks voted for obama

tonyhunter's picture

From what I have read Obama was elected due to heavy support from the black and hispanic community and white women with less support from white men.

If blacks to a t voted for Obama including George Bush's former sidekick Colin Powell and ( I suspect) Steve Earle's heartthrob Condaleezza Rice, can we say the US elections were a blow against racism?

Seems to me the vote went heavily along racial lines after all

I doubt Condi voted blue

But seriously, if it's not a blow against racism, what is it? You may as well argue that the civil rights movement wasn't, or that the fight against slavery wasn't, or that Rosa Parks was wasting her time. Change for the better has always been driven by those not fully represented under the status quo. America has a black president, and that's progress.

Also...

...black people have a strong history of voting for the Democratic Party and white men for the Republican Party. In fact, I think I'm right in saying that more white men voted for Obama than did for John Kerry last time out. That would suggest it's not a race thing at all.

In fact...

...this link to the wonderful fivethreeeight.com shows that Obama got 41% of white male votes, as opposed to 37% for John Kerry.

Interestingly (or not!), the only demographics in which Obama did worse than Kerry were gay and lesbian people and the over-65s.

You beat me to it:

Obama got 41% of white male votes, as opposed to 37% for John Kerry.

Was the point I was going to make. Obama did better among White Males than any Democratic Candidate for a good while I think.
