Ian Carmichael RIP

Beany's picture

Veteran British actor Ian Carmichael has died at the age of 89. Sad to say I thought he was already dead. Made some dashed spiffing fillums and TV shows in his time.

R.I.P.

Not sure how many of the Massive are into their 'golden age' detective fiction, but Ian Carmichael was a superb Lord Peter Wimsey on TV.

Edward Petherbridge probably gave the modern, definitive interpretation of the role (he sort of came along and 'Tom Baker-ed' it) - but Carmichael's original version, more of its time, was a very warm and winning portrayal. And even more convincing in the radio adaptations...

Sad news

Though to be honest I thought he died years ago. I love this era of British comedy and Carmichael was one of its finest stars.

School for Scoundrels - wonderful!

A film with Ian Carmichael AND Terry-Thomas AND Alistair Sim, all in major roles? Such an embarrassment of riches that the sublime Dennis Price and John Le Mesurier have only bit parts.

Ian Carmichael

Gave me more pleasure than just about any other actor. And he was still a handsome devil well into his eighties.

for all the lightness

and seeming whimsy - films like School for Scoundrels not only delight but are a more telling critique of British life and its nuanced divisions than all the work of Pinter or Amis or - God help us - Little Britain.

RIP

I can't let this thread (or Ian Carmichael) go without mention of I'm All Right Jack - a fantastic piece of British industry satire, a superb cast - Sellers, Terry-Thomas, Attenborough, Le Mesurier, Price, Rutherford - with Ian Carmichael being suitably naive in the middle of it all. Very funny.
