I thought I knew you, what did I know...

"My favourite Quo record," I announced confidently as 'Caroline' shuffled off the 'pod.
Mrs Bryer shook her head.
"In the Army Now. That's their best record," she replied.
"What? In the...? No...Never...What? In the Army Now?"
"Yep, In the Army Now."

There's plenty that I like that she doesn't and vice versa, but we cross over more often than not. However, this knocked me sideways. After nearly 15 years, I would never have guessed that the woman I love could come up with something quite so awful.

That pile of s**te...

...is an ear worm of mine - thanks! Especially the bit "You're in the Army - pause - now" Aaaah!

That pause is the hook

I hate it too, but it's the reason it was a hit. I'm serious. We should do a thread on famous pregnant pauses. Often the notes that aren't there are as important as the ones that are.

come up and see me

make me smile

now there was a "mind the gap" moment

Drums

That drum solo...it's killer.

Total pump-up.

As in....

(gap)quietly spoken, "guitar" or the shorter pre chorus one?
First song on the second Garbage disc has a fabulous recurring gap.
Also John, John by the Tansads has a fabulous gap moment.

Great Pauses - Blondie

Hanging on the Telephone. The pause after the phone rings. Followed by DH's voice....... Followed by me jumping about usually

muttnjeff | 28 March 2008 - 12:27pm

DH

for a split second there my brain interpreted DH as being the initials of a certain male hack of some repute.

Sven | 28 March 2008 - 1:15pm

Just attempted

to sing 'Hanging on the Telephone' in a Nottinghamshire accent.

Strangely it doesn't quite work.....

Mrs Drayton

Very kindly bought me a juke box for my 40th. I loaded it with beautiful things. She asked if I was going to put any Sade on it. I did.

Mr Drayton | 28 March 2008 - 1:37pm

Glad to hear it

Similarly, at Mrs Bryer's request, Michael Buble, Barbra Streisand, the soundtracks to The Bodyguard and Coyote Ugly, and others are all to be found on my iPod. Just to even things up a bit when it's in the dock, on shuffle, and we don't want to hear the fourth version of Nobody's Fault But Mine. She might have a point, you know.

Philip Bryer | 28 March 2008 - 2:11pm

Can I just say...

...the Quo's 70s stuff is great. I don't care how unfashionable they've been deemed (mainly for the 80s horrors like 'In The Army Now' and even worse, 'Margarita Time' and 'Burning Bridges' and those hideous cabaret medleys/cover versions) but that run of albums from 'Piledriver' through 'Live' still stand up.

JJ | 28 March 2008 - 5:15pm

He's right, you know....

And a brave man to say so. Dog of two heads and the couple before they suddenly hit paydirt with that run of classic singles, Caroline etc, were quite good too.
Rot set in from Live Aid. (True of most careers, and yes, I do include Queen)

Retropath2 | 28 March 2008 - 5:18pm

One song, they've only got one song...

Good job it's a good one. 'Down Down', 'Mystery Song','Rain', 'Roll Over Lay Down' (what's wrong with being sexy?).

dodger23 | 28 March 2008 - 5:27pm

My dad's favourite song by Chuck Berry...

is 'My Ding-a-Ling'.

How? Is? That? Possible?
