I love the sound of Napalm Death in the morning

Been thinking a bit recently about the extent to which external factors (weather, time of day etc) influence musical appreciation and how certain types of music are particularly suitable (or unsuitable) for specific conditions. As usual, these are very much personal responses but here are some of my more unexpected findings:

- Dub reggae is just the job for very late-night driving

- I've been a fan of The Fall for most of the last 30 years but I've always found it near-impossible to even think about listening to them when its hot outside.

- Strangest of all, although I normally can't stand it, a bit of Thrash Metal can sometimes sound good first thing in the morning. Quite invigorating (for about 30 seconds anyway). A bit like a cold shower I suppose.

Any other suggestions for unexpectedly good/bad situations for types of music?

The Blue Nile

The Blue Nile sound wonderful when you're travelling late home by train, especially on a Friday night. The track "From a late night train" can affect me in a way few tracks can, I have upon occasion had to go on to the next track, no one wants to see a grown man cry on a crowded train. Utterly beautiful song.

Three Orange Kisses From Kazan by The The

I once listened to this on a walkman in rush hour just getting off a train at Waterloo. None to familiar with London at the time (I was in my teens). I had it very loud and was so disorientated by the song and surroundings I had to turn it off and sit down.

And Kennedy by The Wedding Present is superb loud, in the car and on my own where I can join in on the drum kit others call a steering wheel.

Dub Reggae

Always for me is the sound of the sunny day in the back garden, getting the speakers on the windowsill, lager and hotdogs.

Jungle - Bukem, Hype - is to me the perfect soundtrack to late-night driving, especially in any city.
