I have a new phrase to fill your hearts with horror.....

....."harp solo". Makes drum or bass solos pale into insignificance based on tonight's evidence.
Having just got back from Los Lobos (reviewed elsewhere), the support act was, how shall we put this.....amazingly bad taste, musically (IMHO). The Victor Valdez Trio (with it's 4 members, Douglas Adams fans) set about some traditional south american pieces, but a) stuck harp solos all over the place, and b) had some young-gun electric geetar player widdling all over the later numbers. It's difficult to think of how it could have been any more inappropriate or discordant.
Gawd help us.

Victor Valdez?
Named after the Barcelona goalkeeper?
But
was it any good?
I'm always too vague about these sorts of things...
....so no, to be absolutely clear, it was shite.
If it had been a straight musicology tour of south american choons, I might have been able to deal with it, but using various pieces of traditional music (at least that's how he introduced them) as a platform to do horrible harp and guitar solos just beggars belief. Even as part of the Sydney Festival.
What's wrong with harp solos?
1.10 into this, for example:
