"I Hate New Music"

stimpy's picture

Picked up Dave Thompson's book "I Hate New Music" yesterday and read it in one sitting last night.

His argument is, basically, that almost all music produced since 1975 is crap and made by people who just don't 'get' what music is supposed to be about.

I have to say, it struck a chord with me but, more importantly, I was almost in tears of laughter several times.

*Very* funny book, heartily recommended :-)

"Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Beatles, the Who, Elton John (but only the good stuff), the Rolling Stones - these are the names that classic rock worships. But where are the values for which they fought, where is the spirit that they once epitomised? Persuasive, incisive, and drawing blood with every keystroke, "I Hate New Music" is one man's crusade against everything that isn't what rock ought to be. Shamelssly retrospective and defiantly reactionary, "I Hate New Music" examines the sacred cows of the past 30 years - from U2 to the Days of the New, from Radiohead to White Stripes - and then slaughters them for their sins against our souls."

Not sure where to start with all this

maybe us benighted souls (who like some of the 35 years of music made since 1975)have learnt that only 14 year olds see in any value in (selectively "Only the good stuff") worshipping rock "gods", idols always have feet of clay but if it makes you happy so be it!

Thanks for the review I'll make sure I read that book, it sounds a hoot.

I've said it before

presumably he'd want us only to praise

his "good stuff"so has anyone read his biography of Chris Deburgh or his weighty treatise of "newport county"?

Chris...

With the greatest of respect, I think you've missed the point here.

It's a bit of fun... it's a jokey reminiscence... it's not serious.

If you want a comparator, think Danny Baker and his "I don't listen to anything made since 1975" schtick.

Days of the New

is a pretty idiosyncratic reference.

I don't talk to anyone made since 1975.

It's not right. Young people and their self-righteousness. Boil them all, along with their so-called music.

Fine in principle, Retro,

but that would mean not talking to my grand-daughter :-(

her mum....

I don't suppose he says everything pre 1975 is good?

cos I'd enjoy reading a spirited defence of Freddie & The Dreamers and how they're much better than their contemporary equivalents (whoever that would be).

errr....

No, he doesn't :-)

Don't diss Fred. Much maligned I reckon.
