I don't really agree with this album's title:

I very much doubt JM will be jamming along on some sort of a celestial aeolian harp to the fresh hell of Robert Smith's rendition of "Small Hours"! A less enticing cover version of what was a sublime tune I find it hard to imagine.
I fully admit I haven't heard this two (count them!) CD collection, and JM's had a bit of a reappraisal here of late, but the whole package seems a pretty dread prospect. They've even managed to use a cover photo that I doubt Johnny "Boy" would like!

Anyway, just thought I'd flag this record up in case people were unaware of what's skulking in the pre-release shadows.
Looks like it'll be awful, eh?

Incredibly Lovely

Here's another view of the Robert Smith track:

Robert Smith - Small Hours. From the [...] album Johnny Boy Would Love This: A Tribute to John Martyn comes a poignant yet incredibly lovely take on one of Big Muff's most haunting songs.
Dave Simpson

I've heard neither the original nor the cover, so have nothing useful to add!

Small Hours

Is one of my favourite songs. I dislike Robert Smith's voice, so I'm in no hurry to hear his version.

I'm confused

the original version(s) of Small Hours are all instrumental.

Only the live version (bonus track on the deluxe edition of One World) has vocals and even that is just one line repeated several times.

The original

version, on the basic "One World", has singing (it takes about 6 mins before the singing starts, though, I think!)

There are about 8 or 10 lines of lyrics, too...very mumbled, but they're different.

Oh, hang on...here we go:
Singing starts just after 3 mins, actually.

I stand corrected

I flicked through quickly on iTunes and missed the short vocal section. It's not much of a vocal challenge though, is it?

Interesting opinion

Would have to majorly disagree. this is a beautifully sung song, and I wouldn't cue up to have a go at it even if I could really sing.

It may be pretty short

But it's long enough for Robert Smith to ruin it with his manchild wail.

Return of the Grievous Angel

is a fantastic Gram Parsons tribute album, executive produced by Emmylou Harris. It features GP covers by Wilco, The Mavericks, the Cowboy Junkies, Lucinda Williams and David Crosby and some Emmylou duets.

Harder to find is Come and Get It, a tribute to Badfinger, with great stuff from Aimee Mann, The Knack, the Loud Family and Adrian Belew

Going Home

A tribute to Fats Domino is a favourite. Stellar cast including Lennon, McCartney, Robert Plant, Dr John, Tom Petty,Aaron Neville,Randy Newman, Neil Young. A 30 track double CD that I'm sure made the Fat Man smile.

Adios Amigo - A Tribute To Arthur Alexander is another one that hits the spot. Particular special mention to Robert Plant who covered If It's Really Got To Be This Way a track that hadn't been released at that time.

Robert Smith

His version of Small Hours:

A thankless task. Martyn's original, witching hour, al fresco, 'o'er the water' recording with geese honking in the background has such a powerful atmosphere that any cover version loses its eerie potency by default before a note is struck.

The song reflects an innate rhythm of the world, that of nature itself. For me it captures evocatively the trance-like state when we would normally be asleep in the wee small hours but instead lie awake, willingly lost in a calm almost out-of-body reverie, our senses attracted to the ambient sounds of nature (rain on canvas, a wind blowing through the trees) and our minds set adrift by them.

It's music to accompany such rare occurrences, the fleeting moments when we are held by a comforting stasis of time and space that is completely outside of human artifice as measured by a timepiece or four enclosing walls. Although the feeling is intangible, in those same moments we also sense it is something deep and ancient. We suspect the feeling has always been there in our DNA and will endure long after we have gone. That's how powerful Martyn's song is.

Or to put it another way, Smith's version is no embarrassment but it loses far more than it, or any cover, could ever begin to add to the original.

I really enjoyed that.

It sounded like an 80s Cure b-side.
No bad thing, in my book.

Well put, aah bisto

I can't add to that, except to agree that (although I hate Robert Smith's voice ) it's not, in itself, a terrible rendition, it just doesn't touch the original. But then it's difficult to imagine who could.

Here's another one -

Radio 4

Just discussed it on Front Row and didn't seem particularly impressed.
The Snow Patrol track sounded bland but the Beck track was more promising. Dreadful title I can imagine his response and it would get a Parental Advisory warning.

I suspect the odd track will

be worth hearing/downloading---Lisa Hannigan was superb last year imo in a tribute to Nick Drake [Black-eyed dog, below], I'd like to hear her try JM:

PS I don't think the (good) vid quite captures the sound as it was live at the gig I went to.
