I don't believe it!
Posted by Dan E Steel on 7 August 2009 - 9:55pm.
As I'm getting older I feel as if I'm turning into Victor Meldrew.
I rarely listen to Radio 1, but occasionally Mrs C and I will listen to Radio 1 on a Friday night, as we like a bit of dance music every now and again, and R1 usually has Pete Tong on, normally live from Ibiza at this time of year.
However, it seems that Mister Vernon Kay is now Radio 1's choice of dance music presenter on a Friday night. This seems to be an incredible transformation for Mr Landfill Indie, n'est pas?
I know that as a 45 year old R1 isn't aimed at me, but I just think it's very odd, and I felt the need to share it with the Massive. Comments please.

He's off the telly
BBC radio is obsessed with giving airtime to goons off the box. Radio 2 on the weekend is sick with them, 5Live's going the same way and then there's George Lamb. And none of them are any good on radio. I mean, have you heard Alan Carr's show?
DLT
and Peter Powell (and the excruciating ""It's me, Mark Page!") were holding court, the last time I tuned in to Radio 1.
Oh, mustn't forget "Get the geese off!", with zany Steve Wright.
A Good Face For Radio
Used to be the phrase used for the less photogenic presenters who were dead good at radio jobs.
Now, sadly, it seems that the aesthetic component applies to your being on the radio.
At least whatsisface Big Brother bloke oh bollocks I can't be arsed to open another tab to look for his name you know who I mean does the Saturday afternoons on R2 the FPO fancies him a bit I think he does some of that reality shite on ITV oh bollocks what's he called anyway..
..at least he seems to like music a lot and tries to get some interesting acts in on his prog.
Dermot. Gallagher? No.. Arse.. He's the bloke on BBC Breakfast.. or is he? Bums.
O'Leary
'
No
He's also a twat.
Early 80s ?
From memory :
DLT 7-9
Simon Bates 9-12
Andy Peebles 12-2
Tony Blackburn 2-5
Peter Powell 5-7
Documentary 7-8
David Jenson 8-10
Peelie 10-12
Am I right ?
Classic lineup, most of those after midday had at least some interest in music.
Of course I was younger and uglier then ...
Frighteningly popular
though, wasn't it? I can remember clearly 'Simes' Bates playing Dire Straits' Private Investigations in full, then the trademark pregnant pause and slight crack in the voice when it had finished. Also have quite a strong memory of Peter Powell playing ABC's All of My Heart when it went straight in at number 1 (in the days when that was a big deal). Starting to feel quite nostalgic now...
Yes
Where I worked (a TV manufacturing plant in London) it was piped to the whole factory. Everybody listened from 18-65. When Our Tune was on, the whole place practically shut down for 5 mins.
Anorak zipped up fully
I don't remember All of My Heart getting to No 1 - the album did though. Maybe that's what you're remembering? But you're right, that kind of thing WAS a big deal. When Going Underground unexpectedly did the job in 1980, it felt like the kids were rising up en masse.
You're right
only number 5, apparently: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_of_My_Heart
Just shows what a big deal the charts were in those days. IIRC that era (early 80s) is the official high water mark for UK pop in terms of sales isn't it?
Yes, remember the buzz around Going Underground as well. The kids today wouldn't believe it...
You're right too
The early 80s was a huge time for single sales, with million-selling singles not guaranteeing even a No 1 spot. I wonder if you added up all the single sales from 2009 so far, would the combined total match the sales of "Relax" ? Come to think of it, would they even match the sales of Marilyn, Jimmy the Hoover or Haysi Fantayzee?
Lest we forget,
Bargepole recalls the permatanned young free and single Gary Davies - if memory serves wasn't his main jingle the instrumental version of ABC's The Look Of Love .(described as 'part 4' on the 12 inch if memory serves.)
I seem to remember Steve
It's seem to remember Steve Wright doing all his "characters": Mr Angry, etc..
1984?
I've almost started to forgive Simon Bates
Because of his Planet Rock advert v/o
My favourite Radio 1 time was a brief hiatus in the lateish 90's
Chris Evans
Simon Mayo
Newsbeat
Steve Wright
Kev Greening
Steve Lamwhatsit and Jo Thingy
Mark and Lard
Peel
Or am I getting confused and combining eras?
I'm from Purley!
Stop! My aching sides...
Dunno if you know Martin, but
Vernon Kay was only doing a stand in for Tong who's show has been very much the dance equivalent of DLT in the early 1990s these last years, Tong's 50 next year!
Again i dunno if you know, but 2 hours later after Tong finishes THE dance show in the country right now follows at 9 pm and it's hosted by Annie Mac. It's called THE MASH-UP. No word of a lie to say it's the single most exciting dance music radio programme in the world and has been for the last few years. Not to sound evangelical but a more exciting, forward thinking (but still dance-history aware) radio show you couldn't wish for.
A mix of electro, house, dance-pop, classics, rap, dubstep, disco, techno, etc.
Every week there is a pre-recorded 'MiniMix' in which a name DJ plays as many tracks as they can, as cleverly as they can in a 5 minute space. It's frequently brilliant.
Everyone going has done the 5 minute 'MiniMix' from Fatboy Slim, Basement Jaxx, Soulwax, Erol Alkan, Oizo, hot-shot soundtrack guy Clint Mansell (who did an entirely soundtrack-based one).. the complete archive is here http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/mashup/tracklistings.shtml
and most are available 'online' (taps nose).
This week's Annie Mac show is here =
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/mashup/
I can't imagine anyone even vaguley interested in dance wouldn't love the show. As i say just for your info, and anyone else who thinks Radio 1 might have gone to the dogs dance-wise.
Tong, Mac and the crew were brodacsting from Ibiza *last* weekend by the way.
sounds good
I'm going to give it a go
Thanks sandamiano - and they say the youngsters of today are unhelpful and naughty
Looking at some of these
Looking at some of these line up lists makes me realise how long ago it was that I stopped listening to daytime radio one (by the mid-80's I'd returned to listening in the evening). The line up I remember most is;
Noel Edmonds (breakfast)
Tony Blackburn (mid- morning)
Johnny Walker (lunchtime)
David Hamilton (Drivetime - or cycle time as it would have been for me!)
No wonder I was lured away by the classic Capital lineup of;
Kenny Everett & Dave Cash (breakfast)
Tommy Vance (and ahem.. Joan Shenton) Mid morning
Tony Myatt (afternoon)
Roger Scott (drivetime)
Nicky Horne (evening)
Kay's show should be called...
'The Onanist Entertains'.
Thanks for the tip Sandamiano....
...being my age I have nothing against Tong being 50, but I take your point, and will give Annie Mac a listen on the iPlayer. By 9pm i our house, the kids are going to bed so listening to dance music all the way up to 11 isn't really an option, but I will bear Annie Mac in mind the next time Mrs C wants a boogie.
Completely agree with the comments about celebrity DJs as well. I haven't heard Alan Carr's show, but now I know he has one I shall avoid it like the plague! It just goes to show why I only listen to music I own and Radio 4 these days.
BTW the new album from Lindstrom & Prins Thomas, as recommended in a recent edition of the Word, is extremely good, particularly if (like me) you like your dance on the proggy side.
Mark Page,
Bye Bye Now. How we laughed, no I mean it, at the time we DID!
why oh why
why are you listening to radio 1???
Victor Meldrew?
I feel as if I'm like Alf Garnett in his less sweet-hearted moments. Trouble is I started feeling like this when I was about 25. Still, I like grumpy old bastards... why do you think I spend so much time on this site?!
Daytime radio
has been going downhill since the late Roger Scott passed away. He was a giant and makes many of today's prattling ninnies sound like the pygmies they are.
Alan Carr
Has the worst radio voice of all time. What were they thinking?
He has a good face for radio...
unfortunately he has a bad voice for it.
Some
found his "stop smoking" tapes helpful I believe
I've read the book...
not that it did me much good (lights gasper). Who knew that Mr Carr was such a multi-talented guy?!
Tong and Mac *switched*!
U know i'm sure (in light of jo wiley and now this) that someone from Radio 1's top bods reads these forums.
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/broadcasting/a170648/steve-lamacq-dropped-fr...
Now that's what I call service!
I am very impressed that the Man at Radio 1 has read this blog and has swapped Tong & Mac's shows just for me and Mrs C, so we can listen to Annie Mac before Have I Got News for You comes on the telly.
Who says the BBC doesn't listen to it's audience? I should start another thread full of my ideas of how they can improve their news coverage......
