I Didn't See It Coming

Dr Yang's picture

They get a decidedly mixed response from some quarters in these parts, but I think Richard X's remix actually turns Belle and Sebastian into what Saint Etienne (or possibly The Human League) might have sounded like if they'd been from Glasgow.

Nice animation too, and is that a little reference to the video for Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer video at the end?

Not sure about that,

but the Hornmeister certainly worked his production magic on them with the fantastic 'Dear Catastrophe Waitress', albeit in rather a more subtle way than his FGTH extreme makeover...

's only a remix though

Yes, DCW was my favourite - I think it was also the first one I'd bought rather than hearing via friends.

As this is only a remix and not producing an actual song for them I think he has more leeway to play about with things and make it his own as he's not messing with the band's sound. The original version is much more recognisable as Belle and Sebastian.

The Avalanches did a lovely reworking of "I'm A Cuckoo" which also didn't sound much like the original (and possibly not what most people would expect from an Avalanches remix):

Ooh, I like that!

I also found that, perhaps because of the electro-dancey-ness of the remix, when Stuart Murdoch comes in halfway through he sounds oddly like Phil Oakey.

Is this on an album?

Any more remixes available?
I like B&S, and - as a fan of electronic music - I really like this too. I'd like them to approach a whole record like that.

Thanks for posting it.

It's out on the 18th July apparently

that's all. Glad others are liking it too.

Very good

I like this, and I like the way that they are willing to play about with their music.

Top video too.

However, I think this is the end of the last album - final single, end of tour, etc - just hope they do more stuff soon (including the movie, please).
