I could've been a High Court Judge, but I didn't have the Latin

Rigid Digit's picture

I have just purchased a 3 CD Set of Prog Rock, titled 'Ars Longa Vita Brevis'.
Some Latin I can get/interpret (eg Romanus Eunt Domus), but I haven't got a clue of the trtanslation for this.

Can the highly educated Massive provide assistance for a failed High Court Judge?

Art is long, life is short.

Cheers

Seems so straightforward and logical now (Longa = Long, Brevis = Short). Although, I would've still get stuck with the 'Ars' & 'Vita' bits.

Latin? Simple really isn't it.

And in Italian...

and Spanish

el arte es largo, la vida es breve.
umění je dlouhá,život je krátký , doesn't have the same ring to it.

Funny that

I heard today that 'acappella' means 'from the chapel' ie from the choir unaccompanied (latin)

A useful variant to use in a retirement card....

...of someone of less than average height:

Vita longa, ars brevis

"Romanes eunt domus"?

People called Romanes, they go, the house?

From The Sun

After her horrific tour-bus accident Gloria Estefan was pictured in The Sun being wheeled from the hospital to an ambulance. The picture ran in the Tuesday edition of the paper and the caption was (drum roll please):

Sick Transit Gloria, Monday

I haven't seen the track listing

but given the title of the compilation is Ars Longa Vita Brevis, it would be a very dumb compiler who then failed to include The Nice.

Is the Compilation Any Good ?

Seems quite a weird eclectic mix - worth a punt ??

From what I've listened to so far

its worth a go.

Not all of the "Ususl Suspects" (eg no tracks from, Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, Matching Mole etc), but a good mix nonetheless.
Some of the tracks are unexpected (Are the Small Faces, Status Quo or The Kinks really Prog?).
Chose it for the eclectic mix, seemed more interesting than many others I looked at.

Worth a tenner? - in short, Yes

In the context of a prog compilation it means:

"Arty" instrumental noodling passages interminably long, vocals in short supply.
