Hymns to professions
Posted by DougieJ on 30 January 2010 - 12:52pm.
I already know this is the greatest song ever written in praise of a profession, but do you have any other suggestions?

Joe Jackson
introducing a song on his Rock Goes To College Set from the early 80s....
"....most songs are about 'I'm in love and the world is wonderful', or 'my girlfriend left me and the world isn't wonderful'. This song's about a guy who works in a butchers shop in Peckham who gets involved in voodoo". Can't remember which song, and I don't care, this was all I needed to take with me.
And also from Little Feat...
'Rock n Roll Doctor'?
er..
this probably doesn't count, does it?
Neck and neck with Willin'?
Very good call.
I suppose why I went for Willin' is that it's more about the job than his true love (Dallas Alice) whereas WL is the other way round. Both superlative tunes anyway...
Beat me to it, Doctor
One of the best songs ever written about anything.
How about this one?
He's a cowboy, on his steel horse he rides
And, apparently, he's wanted, dead or alive
"I'm Jet Spotter of the track"
is about being a racing driver from the Aylesbury area, and includes the wonderful line "Look out Princes Risborough, I'm back"
Jet Spotter
The title 'Jet Spotter' was infact a reference to a pal of John Otway - Jeff Potter. Potter was a kind of ligging personality on the edge of the Aylesbury music scene in the 1970's.
Otway's oeuvre is littered with references to local
'personalities' from the early-mid 70s, as well as plenty of local places.
Jet Spotter mentions Magenta Devine ("69 with Magenta Devine") with whom - in her days as Kim Taylor - Otway had a bit of a thing (cough) 'allegedly'.
Bean Counters Unite!
Milkmen!
Billy Bragg and Benny Hill spring immediately to mind.
Yes! Milkmen!
If I might proudly fly the flag for my profession..
Who didn't want to be an astronaut
after listening to this?
