HTC HD Mini

Mint's picture

I'm about to upgrade my old phone to something a bit more up to date, and i've come across a good deal on the above(don't want to be paying more than 20/25 quid a month and not pay for the phone). I've read reviews for this and others, HTC Wildfire, Samsung Wave, Nokia N8 and am as confused as you could possibly be.

My question is has anyone got this phone and what do they think of it?

Am very taken with the looks etc, but am a bit concerned about the OS being windows and the possibility of it becoming obsolete, also have read that apps for this phone are very poor and expensive.

As ever over to the massive for unbiased views/help, thanks

Am just upgrading myself

I've been using an HTC Touch for the last year or so, a good phone great for surfing the internet and google maps etc. I'd certainly recommend HTC, but the Windows Mobile OS does let it down. Windows Mobile was designed around the old PDA devices and doesn't translate well to touch screen, indeed my Touch came with a stylus (needless to say I lost it within weeks!). Slow and fiddly to use and as for Apps? Forget it. Windows has just issued Mobile 7 which may be better but unlike a computer you cannot always upgrade the OS on a phone so if its Mobile 6 you may be stuck with that.

If you want Apps, and you don't want to go down the iPhone route then you wanna get an Android device. I have ordered the HTC Desire HD Android phone which has has had rave reviews.

If you already have a pay monthly contract then I strongly recommend contacting your existing provider and see what they will offer you.

You can usually get a much better deal by speaking to a human than by dealing online, especially if you drop hints you have seen a good deal elsewhere or are thinking of changing networks! They will want to keep your custom and you might find you can get a much better phone for nothing.

Sometimes better online.

When I phoned Vodafone to tell them I was moving to Orange because I could get a better deal on an HTV Desire they simply gave me my PAC. A week later they phoned me back to offer me a deal that still wasn't as good as the one I'd found online (albeit with cash back redemption claims).
I'm very very happy with the phone by the way. Angry Birds has just been released for it and it's free. I highly recommend shelling out for Missing Sync though it makes backing up your data a breeze and if, like me, you have a PC on all the time at home (for serving music, grabbing newspapers for Kindle etc) then you don't even ever have to see it working.... it more importantly gives you access to your calendar way back to whenever, my entries go back to 1995 (I'm not sure I really need to go back that far though but the few months that the native calendar gives you is nearly useless.)

From people I've spoken to

No one I've met has a good word to say about Windows Mobile 6/6.5. Windows Mobile 7 has had good reviews but it's a first release and I don't know how cheap the new phones will be.

I'd go with an Android phone, personally.
Android compares very well with the iPhone OS; although it's less polished and there aren't as many applications. But, then again, there are things you can do on an Android phone you can't do on an iPhone.

its an evolution thing

I'll defend Windows 6. I wouldn't want to go back to it now but it could do far more than the old palm I upgraded from. But that was over 3 years ago and we've moved on a lot since then. I know the iPhone was around in those days but it was extremely restricted and about 3 times the cost of my Acer pda so wasn't really a comparable option
