Apparently
99.9% of the 9,149 people in the US with the first name 'Nigel' are male. Or rather were - the stats are based on the 1990 census, so things may have changed. (NB I'm not yet sufficiently awake to subtly avoid gender reassignment ambiguities here. Sorry. My point was leaning more towards the strange American penchant for regendered names, as in Lionel Shriver or Miss Michael Learned.) Anyway, there were 21 with my name there, and it seems my mum and brother were both famous. (No-one tells me anything.)
Gender swapping names
Yes and have you noticed he trend in recent years for blokes names to become women's names. Remember when Joe, Sam, Billy, Chris, Nicky, Jamie were boy's names? Not anymore they're not. And what do we get in return? Kelly (or Kele if you're a Bloc Party fan), and that's about it.

I don't think I've seen 'Niks' as a male diminuative before, so you've gained yourself.
I just had to look up the meaning of diminutive...
...before I understood that. And also discovered the words hypocoristic (similar thing, shortened version of a longer name, eg Tony) and Apocopation (cutting off the final syllables in a word, eg photo or anime).
Now I'll get on with some work I think.
