How many albums can you list all the tracks in the correct order on without cheating?

Tubular Bells!

But if I'm playing properly...I'd have said maybe all the Smiths albums (for some reason) and that's about it.

(My memory for this sort of thing is fading, and the iPod has made it worse - I don't get it out of my pocket and look at it the whole time, so it takes me months before I even get the hand of what a lot of individual tracks are called!)

4
Specs_Beard | 18 January 2011 - 12:09am

Snap!

I reckon Tubular Bells is the only one I would be confident about, though 20 years ago I'm sure I could have realled off the tracks for a whole raft of Genesis, Floyd, Yes and Spizzenergi albums. Probably Toyah, Ian Dury and a few others too.

As I approach the big 5-0 I find it harder to cling on to such information accurately, though I could probably have a decent stab at Animals.

And Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygene of course, but I'm sure that doesn't count.

Skuds | 18 January 2011 - 1:45am

Ooh that's tough

May have to have a lie down first.
I want to say all the Pixies ones but...

Quite a few

I can correctly list the tracks on virtually every album I bought within the first 2 years of owning a CD player (including some real stinkers). And I can name hardly any from the 15 years or so since. Evidently my brain reached it's capacity quite quickly.

0
atcf | 18 January 2011 - 1:14am

Joshua Tree

Where the Streets Have No Name
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
With or Without You
Bullet the Blue Sky
Running to a Standstill
Red Hill Mining Town
In God's Country
Trip Through Your Wires
One Tree Hill
Exit
Mothers of the Disappeared
If I am being honest, probably only the side ones or first five tracks of most albums now.
Now who's the biggest spod, and can do all 69 Love Songs without google or looking at the sleeve?

Checking this...

So close! 23/25 (I got 21 and 22 the wrong way round).

Fun game, this

0
Joe R | 18 January 2011 - 9:52am

Are you by any chance

a fan of Belle and Sebastian?

(In which case you should also be able to do the Looper and Gentle Waves albums...)

0
Humphrey Plugg | 18 January 2011 - 10:31am

How did you guess?

I've never heard a Looper record and find The Gentle Waves a little dull, unfortunately. I can't even do all the B&S albums (no Fold Your Hands or Storytelling in my guessing game).

0
Joe R | 18 January 2011 - 10:50am

Looper

An excellent introduction to them would be to download the three free EPs available here: http://www.geometrid.co.uk/mp3.asp

All 8 songs are very good, whereas their albums vary between quirkily great and tediously twee (or in the case of The Snare, boringly repetitive)

0
Humphrey Plugg | 18 January 2011 - 11:01am

You're a gent

I'll give those a look when I'm home tonight - thanks.

0
Joe R | 18 January 2011 - 11:27am

Sterling work...

I thought about trying "Exile' and then gave it up as a lost cause.

0
Patrick Crowther | 18 January 2011 - 9:59am

Me Too

I got lost in the middle like I always do, favourite album by a country mile though.

0
Pat Carty | 18 January 2011 - 10:03am

ditto...

I could probably make it as far as 'Happy'...

0
ivan | 18 January 2011 - 10:43am

It's so familiar to me now

The tracks all seem to segue into each other... I mean, the honking intro to 'Turd On The Run' is almost a part of 'Happy' etc.

0
Slotbadger | 18 January 2011 - 10:50am

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden

The Rainbow / Eden / Desire
Inheritance
I Believe in You
Wealth

Yep, all 4 tracks!

Hear Me Calling
In Like A Shot From My Gun
Darling Be Home Soon
Know Who You Are

Keep on Rocking
Get Down and Get With it
Born to be Wild

I wouldn't bet a great deal of money that's correct

0
Cookieboy | 18 January 2011 - 10:23am

Slade alive

That looks correct to me, &, IMHO, the best live album ever.

0
jackthebiscuit | 22 January 2011 - 4:42pm

Missed out Big Cheese at the

Missed out Big Cheese at the end of Bleach, too. At least on my version, though perhaps it wasn't on the original.
Some releases of it had Downer after Big Cheese, as well.

0
Mark Wallace | 18 January 2011 - 12:04pm

Those were B-sides...

...tacked onto the end of Bleach in the wake of Nevermind. Downer was dropped from that reissue after being included on Incesticide.

I started their other albums, but got lost very early on.

0
Joe R | 18 January 2011 - 11:45am

This is it.

I loved them when I was 16

I think The Hold Steady are probably the only band who I've discovered after my teens that I could possibly do this with.

0

Marking

'Castaways and Cutouts' has 'Clementine' and 'Legionnaire's Lament' the wrong way round.

'Her Majesty'- completly missed 'Song For Myla Goldberg' and the order of 'Red Right Ankle' and 'The Soldiering Life' is wrong.

'Picaresque'- 100% (unless I'm mistaken)

'The Crane Wife'- Track #2 is a given, completely missed 'When The War Came' and 'The Crane Wife 1 and 2' is one song.

'The Hazards of Love'- Terribe. Apart from getting the song titles wrong in some of them, I missed out 'The Abduction of Margaret' and 'Margaret in Captivity' as well as combining 'The Queen's Rebuke' with 'The Queen's Rebuke' and confusing 'The Queen's Revenge' with Margaret.

Overall score= C

I'm either showing off, or showing I had no friends as a teenager an spent my time memorising album track listing, catalogue numbers and chart positions (sadly, the latter is the closest to the truth)

EDIT: Bugger! Forgot 'Saturdays Kids' (between 'Smithers-Jones' &'Eton Rifles'

The Queen is dead / Frankly Mr. Shankly / I know it's over / Never had no one ever / Cemetry gates / Bigmouth strikes again / The boy with the thorn in his side / Vicar in a tutu / There is a light that never goes out / Some girls are bigger than others

Strangeways Here We Come:
A rush and a push and the land is ours / I started something I couldn't finish / Death of a disco dancer / Girlfriend in a coma / Stop me if you think you've heard this one before / Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me / Paint a vulgar picture / Unhappy birthday / Death at one's elbow / I won't share you

Okay, let's try this backwards... I used to be able to do it.

12. Love is Blindness
11. Acrobat
10. Ultraviolet (Light My Way)
9. Trying to Throw Your Arms Around the World
8. Mysterious Ways
7. The Fly
6. So Cruel
5. Who's Going to Ride Your Wild Horses
4. Until the End of the World
3. One
2. Even Better than the Real Thing
1. Zoo Station

I'll check in a minute, but I have to confess to remembering the intro's of the songs as I skipped through them using the old Aiwa system digital track number screen. Bit of an easy memory prompt really... this CD was never off that thing!

How did I do?

Genius! I've still not lost it!
Actually, I remember doing this randomly at a party last year as something of a party piece. The other guests remember it too... though not quite with the same affection.
