How good a guitarist is Elvis Costello?

Yeah, he’s called himself “Little Hands of Concrete”. As a shite guitarist but quite good songwriter myself, I can relate to that.
He never makes anyone’s Top 50 Guitarist polls, but he’d scrape into mine. Of all his talents, it’s the least talked about. So?. Anyone rate him?

I'd rate him too, now that I think of it. The riff on Chelsea is ace and he can bring great delicacy to bear on things like Baby Plays Around...
Understated guitar...
... but top quality
He's not a brilliant guitarist
but his songs don't demand anything too fancy. His playing perfectly complements his songs. My favourite of his is the film-noirish guitar intro on Watching the Detectives.
Gets better with age
Great topic, bladderman (if that is your real name)
His latest record has some great guitar playing, really impressive, distinctive stuff that seems to reflect him improving as an instrumentalist. I'm thinking of Slow Drag With Josephine, Bullets for the New Born King, Jimmie Standing In The Rain, One Bell Ringing. I've seen him do them live, they're tricky.
When I saw him a few years ago..
he was the only guitar player onstage, and he was damned good. You can't fake that.
Agree with DrJ, Elvis has
Agree with DrJ, Elvis has gotten a lot better in recent years, no virtuoso for sure, but way more competent than his earlier playing.
He's chamged and developed as a guitarist
as his music has., From noisy rock n roll guitar to more complex and subtle back for his lyrics, Not that he's lost the ability to make a good racket
I was surprised
when I heard 'Sweet Pear' off the (unfairly IMO) derided 'Mighty Like A Rose' to find that EC had played the solo, as I had never really considered his guitar playing, even though I'd been a fan since MAIT came out. Thinking on it now, it sort of reminds me of John Lennon's guitar style; not particularly technical, but pretty effective, as well as mildly surprising, but always interesting.
He hides his light under a bushel
I think he's a very good guitarist, but because he has worked with great musicians (including two of my favourite guitarists, James Burton and Marc Ribot) he gives them the spotlight.
The guitar is mixed low on the earlier albums but the live recordings show him as a fine guitarist.
He's better than Brian James..
..but not as good as Jerry Garcia.
