Hombre Lobo: Early thoughts?

Gav Leonard's picture

Finally managed to find a record shop this afternoon to pick up the much anticipated (in this house) new Eels album and I'm currently on the fourth spin. The 'Deluxe Edition' DVD remains unwatched in it's box, much as the Essential Eels DVD has for the last year.

My early impressions are good but I tend to like much of what he puts out, even the occasionally maligned Souljacker (from which the central character of this loosely conceptual album is taken). The press seems to have been very positive, despite mentions of it being 'unlikely to appeal to newcomers', though I find it as accessible as anything from the back catalogue, while The Longing is really, very, special.

I know that there are a few other Everett-ites on here, many thanks by the way to whoever posted the link to the 'Live at Town Hall' tracks, so I was wondering how others were getting to grips with it?

Love it

It's everything I want from Eels, but slightly different from all the other albums.
All killer for me.
Thanks for asking.

Loving it so far

I have given it a spin about 3 times, and it seems to be a nice mixture of Shootenanny and the earlier stuff. No favourites as yet, but give it time. If he ever writes another It's a Motherfucker I will want to marry him. I love that song.

I like it

Had it on in the car a couple of times this week and I like it. Tremendous Dynamite in particular.

Must buy soon

I love Eels - I saw the movie "Yes Man" on a flight recently and the soundtrack is full of Eels songs, it was a pleasant surprise! Makes you realize how great they are.

A very shallow viewpoint I know

but I like the slower songs a lot. Not so keen on the faster ones.

Play some slow...

E has always had a bit of a knack for melancholy and wistfulness and slow songs such as the Lemonheads-esque My Timing Is Off and the aformentioned The Longing are superb. I'm a big fan of Fresh Blood and Tremendous Dynamite as well, they put me in mind of Eagles of Death Metal for some reason.

Been competing

with the Madness album for dominance on my Ipod this week. Have got the vinyl with gold foil sleeve on order. Fast or slow, he rocks my world.

Ticks all the Eels boxes

I watched the DVD also and it gives some context to the songs on the CD. What a small studio! The triumvirate of Tremendous Dynamite, The Longing and Flesh Blood is the finest 10 minutes in rock this year.

good times

I have yet to purchase this, but I always like the Eels. So many good songs. Souljacker Pt 1 is probably my favourite song by E.

I strongly recommend E's solo album "A Man Called E".

"Blinking Lights..." was quite long though...

Sorry I am late

Amazon were late getting my copy to me even though I pre-ordered it. Very good on first 2 listens - I also really like Tremendous Dynamite. Like the way his voice is very slightly distorted on a couple of tracks. Cant wait for the tour. He is a very engaging performer.
