Is this a hit?
Good Elvis Costello interview in this month's mag, Mr H, although EC always puts his best side out; does he really enjoy supporting Dylan and, er, The Police?
As someone who devoured his every last fart and whistle for 20 years I find his latest stuff uninvolving, but he's always had a way with a cover version and this one of Christina Aguillera's Beautiful
from the House soundtrack is up there with the very best. I can't claim to know what a hit sounds like anymore but surely this is one? Could a younger person (most of you, judging by the 'Birthday hit' thread) enlighten me?

I love Elvis Costello but that cover and his cover of "She" leave me totally cold. Sometimes the song don't suit the singer and Elvis can't sing that type of song. IMHO. To be fair he's tried plenty of different directions but sometimes someone should act like an editor and tell him, Elvis No. Or maybe Declan NO. Still like the hat though.
Beautiful
I've heard several versions of Beautiful and it almost always sounds great, especially when it isn't buried under thick layers of knowing irony. In fact Aguilera's version was pretty top notch. It's a genuinely great song and I'm petty sure that if someone else had recorded it before Aggers got her mitts on it then it would have a lot more cred. I've played it myself a couple of times in my bedroom on an acoustic guitar and the pivotal chord change in the chorus is immensely pleasurable.
