There's a marvellous selection of historical photos from the Oxford Street HMV store here: http://www.voicesofeastanglia.com/2011/11/more-from-hmv-oxford-street-st.... I could have picked almost any of them to illustrate this post, but I just love this 1953 shot of the record racks and listening station, a Stanley Kubrick/Clockwork Orange vision of what a record store should look like. Wonderful.

I bet in those days
you could park your jet car or rocket pack right outside, too.
and there appear to be a manageable number of
'this months releases'
Excellent
That's a great picture, I love it! It has a slightly sinister quality to it, will have a look at the other pictures now.
Oh for the days of a
'Central Record Information Bureau'
Ashtrays
The ashtrays by the listening post are a nice touch to remind us this is the past and not the future.
They're not ashtrays
They're giant USB sticks.
Listening Booths
I remember the old listening booths very fondly in an old record shop called, suitably enough, 'The Gramophone Shop'. I listened to both the Faces 'A Nod's As Good As a Wink' and Neil Young's 'Harvest' so I could decide between them. I chose the Faces and bought Neil Young much later. I also remember calling in from school with friends to listen to 'Led Zeppelin II' and 'On The Boards' by Taste (Rory Gallagher's old group)- ah - nostalgia.
