Hip Hop Trivia Fact

marmiteboy's picture

I was listening to an excellent programme on Radio 4 yesterday afternoon (part of the Radio Archives series) that celebrated vinyl, ity being sixty yeasr old and all that and I came across an amazing bit of trivia. Although my more learned Worders are probably aware of this already I'm posting it anyway so please forgive me if you know about this.

The programme concentrated on those marvellous people who spend their lives digging through crates of old records so they can nick a bit of it for their own records (i.e, DJ Shadow, Mr Scruff and every hip-hop dj there ever was.)

As part of the programme this Eminem track was played and I was amazed to find out who had a hand in its very famous riff.

For it was none other than this pair of herbets.

I knew that Mr Chas and Mr Dave were once top session musicians but I didn't know that they had inspired Marshall Bruce Mathers III and created a hip hop monster!! As if Snooker Loopy wasn't enough.

You mean that Chas and Dave played on

..."I Got The" by Labi Siffre?
(Go to about 2:11 or so)

You forget to mention

Labbi Siffre who was playing the fender rhodes rather than Chas. Nice bass line there Dave.

I refer to the honourable Dr Yang.

Big shout out to my boy the dog Hank "Windows" Marvin realer than real with his Shadows going back to the source. http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Tim_Westwood

'This pair of herbets'...

I am a bit fed up of people treating Chas and Dave as a joke. They wrote some bloody good songs, are very good musicians and deserve more respect. I would much rather listen to them than Eminem.

I think it's geographical

Just as, if you're not Welsh, the mere mention of the name Max Boyce causes clinically verified palpitations and cold sweats, if you're not from the Home Counties, exposure to Chas and Dave can cause impetigo (commonly known as "bringing one out in hives").

Cockneys and Taffs

I'm not sure it's as simple as that - often it's the opposite. Mention Max Boyce to many Welsh people and you'll get a fist in the face before you reach the "B" of the Boyce. Chas, Dave, and Max have all become stereotypes - but that's not going to stop me enjoying "Ain't No Pleasin' You".

Correction

Hives = urticaria ("nettle rash") As in:

"Well I like coffee and I like tea
But I just don't like this fiddle-di-dee
It makes me nervous, it gives me the hives
Waiting for a kiss from a bunch of fives

Just when I think I could learn to forget her
Right through the door come a tear-stained letter
Oh, oh, oh love love love
Cry, cry if it makes you feel better
Set it all down in a tear-stained letter
Oh, oh, oh love love
Cry, cry if it makes you feel better
Set it all down in a tear-stained letter
Oh, oh, oh
Cry, cry if it makes you feel better
Set it all down in a tear-stained letter"
(Course you know the song, this is Word!)

Impetigo is a nasty infectious skin disease caused by staph aureus, probably not the rash, however, in this song:

"To change the mood a little
I've been posing down the pub
On seeing my reflection
I'm looking slightly rough
I fancy this, I fancy that
I wanna be so flash
I give a little muscle
And I spend a little cash
But all I get is bitter and a nasty little rash"

And the songs are?

A chastened word-doctor writes

My defence: I never let the facts get in the way of a good word, and "impetigo" is several orders of magnitude more amusing than "urticaria".

Hang around Tim

There may not be an RTphile around just now, but there will be a stream of 'em in a minute.

Did you know that at the African WOMAD

Chas and Dave are classed as World Music?

I'd rather listen to them

I'd rather listen to them too (and I can't stand 'em). 'Herberts was a term of affection. They are excellent musicians, that is true but (sorry Mtr Hepworth) they made two records about Tottenham Hotspur and that is a musical crime.

"You can keep the Costa Brava...

...I'm tellin' ya mate I'd rather
Have a day down Margate with all me family."

Take that, Mr Mathers!

Another favourite is "Old Dog and Me".

Not just session players either

Chas was an integral part of Heads Hands And Feet...
