Hip Hop - the international language
Posted by David Hepworth on 27 April 2009 - 8:55am.
Danny Baker sent me this clip of Dutch hip hop artist Dio. Not only is it a great clip in an Betamax kind of way but it also reminds us that although hip hop ought to be the most culturally specific music it turns up all over the world in the strangest local varieties.
Anyone know any? From China? Bhutan? Finland?

THAT is what the Internet was invented for.
The best video I've seen for years (I'm assuming it *is* recent and not a genuine 1983 recording off a dodgy VHS)
I checked with a Dutch friend who's in the know
Who says:
"It is brilliant. Didn't know the man, although he's rapping on a couple of records by other groups I do know. He released an album on Top Notch, Holland's main hip hop label, last year. The vid is made to look old, yes.
"There are quite a few good Dutch hip hop groups. If you like this tune, check out De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig, they're pretty funny."
I just saw some Zimbabweans at WOMAD
doing an impromptu rap/dancehall set, with their drummers mimicking the scratches and rewinds of a DJ!
Funny you should mention that
I caught a bit of a documentary last night about Palestinian rappers - turbans and "I've got something gooey stuck to my fingers" gestures. It didn't really work, frankly.
Oh and I'm not sure what this fellow is on about...
...but I'm told there is a thriving rap scene in the Palestinian refugee camps of the Lebanon, and that because the artists are from different factions but like to "clash" in MC battles etc, the networks that it forms actually allow young people to communicate with one another in a way that bypasses the barriers set up by Hezbollah, Fatah and the rest.
It's not the same without the
box-fresh Adidas and the fat gold chains :-)
Dio reminded me...
...anyone remember Urban Dance Squad another Dutch outfit that worked around the genres of hip hop, soul and rock? I loved this track when it came out. Not sure it gives any sense of canals, bike rides and dykes but it is Dutch and is neither Focus or Golden Earring.

Although I do have a Video CD of Turkmenistan rap I picked up in a market in the northern town of Dasoguz, near the border with Uzbekistan.
The Norwegian entry
Must be Side Brok from the north western part of Norway. They rap in their local dialect. Which more than once has left me stumped, and I am supposed to speak the same language.
There's loads of Polynesian rap in NZ
It's nice and easy going, generally. De La Soulish.
Sweden
Just found this - it's a Swedish band called Movits. They rap. And they swing. And I like this a lot.
My night at the Rjöundhuus with Bjöb Dylan
It's the two-note monosong! The lyrics sound very familiar too. Isn't it something off Freewheelin'?
