Not even close to being as much of a waste of space as this pointless and mean-spirited comment of yours. Honestly, why bother? You don't like Supertramp, fine, move on, find another thread, start one about something you like.
It's probably far better to let the stuff you don't like pass by, and post something you do like. I'm finding all the negativity here a little overwhelming.
be thoughtful. Rather than just post a video without commentary, tell us why we should watch it, why it means something to you, why you want to share. Don't post in a throwaway fashion. Have a point
In her nubile days. I could hum a few of their tunes, but wasn't a huge admirer. Neverthless, she fetched me along to see Roger Hodgson in Glasgow a few weeks ago. He played a lot of old and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not to everyones cup of tea, but neither is it film of public kitten executions.
It is musical entertainment. Sense of proportion please.
Although, as said above, without Hodgson they're a bit like the Stones without Mick or Keith.
I'm often thought: Radiohead have been held up as the patron saints of lower-middle class, over-educated, under-achievers, and lauded to the skies for it. The 'Tramp covered most of the same themes in the seventies (Why are we here? Must I work for the man when he's being so unpleasant to me? Why am I so dissatisfied with modern living? etc) with better gags, and they're seen as a bit wet.
.....this old blog was small enough to identify and love the prejudices of the regulars. So, for old times sake, Patrick, once more with feeling, and love....... Fuck off with yer execrable supertramp claptrap. (It would be sin for me not so to say)
Smileys optional.
And may I say how wonderful it is to hear your scorn for my beloved Supertramp once more!
I have to say that I can never understand it when people are so precious about bands they like that they can't bear criticism of them. I can fully understand why many people might think the oeuvre of Hodgson and Davies to be a crock of shit, but this could never make the slightest dent in my love for their music.
Hence the "you can tell me to fuck off later" part of the thread title.
Mr Blue Sky came on the wireless recently and I, horrifyingly, found myself appreciating (NOT aka liking,I hope, please God) the way it was all put together. Am I losing it?
Sir B. McKenzie's Daughter's Lament For The 77th Mounted Lancer's Retreat From The Straits Of Loch Knombe, In The Year Of Our Lord 1727, On The Occasion Of The Announcement Of Her Marriage To The Laird Of Kinleakie? It's a cracker.
It's my opinion, as worthless as anyone else's. I didn't care for that version myself.
I do wonder if perhaps we sometimes try to be too ridiculously polite.
Everyone's posts are about opinion after all, whether it's loving/hating Supertramp or hugging/birching hoodies.
Yours, ever so humbly,Doug.
You don't get the visual or aural clues with posts that would otherwise accompany a chat in the pub. I read your post as "nah, you're wrong, I'm right".
That may not have been what you meant but given how chippy things have been getting round here lately the same point, phrased differently invites a different form of response.
with politeness, One of the things I like about this site.
However when you are having to check every single thing you post in case the slightest offence could be taken then it does rather make one wonder as to whether it is worth contributing.
As with some others, perhaps it's time for me to leave.
out of interest and after checking a couple of people's twitter pages I now see that yourself, Archie and 5 Centres have been been deliberately trying to start an arguement with me.
Well don't worry, I shall leave the site now, you've succeeded in making it too unpleasant for me to put up with any more.
And they say there are no cliques? when people go from here to slagging people off on twitter and betting whether they can get someone to retaliate, it's gone beyond what I have any interest in contributing to.
Thanks to the people who offered kind words when my mother passed last christmas, this blog got me through a rough time back then.
Cheers, Doug.
I was referring to the other poster who was wanting to bet with archie about getting a reaction from me.
Apologies if I misrepresented you and perhaps I've taken wrong the unpleasant tweets aimed at myself and "My American Mate".
Slagging people off in other places is rather cowardly and seems to be how you get around Fraser's sensible refereeing of this place.
Anyway, call it flouncing or whatever you care to, the truth is that I don't care to contribute in that sort of atmosphere.
I promise no further posts so feel free to politely slag me here and have a real go over on Twitter.
Personally, I decided to draw a line under all this 'clique' stuff when I saw the Mucca Mad Boys on TV and drew too many uncomfortable parallels. Grown men in gangs - not a good look.
Last week I tweeted that IMHO you should either engage in the debate on-Blog (so to speak) or by DM. Indirect Twitter slagging off is not very nice. I do think though, in this specific case, you can't deride the generally polite tone of the blog and also get upset about people being rude. Live by sword etc.
Crime of the Century was a big favourite of mine when it came out all those years ago. Hide in Your Shell still gets me singing along badly enough to set the dogs howling.
and yes; gr...eh, really rather good band.
But I am amazed that people still go and see them live.
It's one of those eternal truths passed down from fathers to sons: "Supertramp is THE dullest band you can see live, ever. Now do your homework."
I've heard it so many times that I would rather consider playing a game of Russian roulette than purchase a ticket to a Supertramp concert (original members optional).
I guess some dads forgot to do their duty towards their offspring.
They were never exactly 'animated' on stage and their interaction with the audience seemed very awkward. But when i saw them in 1983 they were great, despite the lack of rock n' roll histrionics. Sometimes it's enough to hear a bunch of songs you love played exceptionally well.
a lot of Supertramp was pretty lame especially after the first few albums and the logical song fits that category for mine.
Crime of the Century , produced by Ken Scott was pretty damn good. I recall it often being played in hi fi shops when sales people wanted to impress customers with a sound system.
I saw in the street, a terrible sight, an old man in ragged clothes standing with his palm outstretched. And he was singing 'when i was young it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.'
I went up to him and said 'Supertramp' and he said 'thanks very much, i do my best'
I had the misfortune...
of being dragged along to one of their gigs earlier this year.
The worst gig I've ever attended, bar none.
The between song "banter" was toe-curling, and to say the band
were disinterested would be the understatement of the year.
I'm far too well brought up to tell you to fuck off though.
Not really Supertramp
Without Roger Hodgson who tours as himself.
He'd do well...
to tour as anyone else.
Supertramp was the name on the ticket.
And it was broooooooootal.
With regard to this post
the phrase 'waste of space' springs to mind.
Anyone got a video of a dog on a skateboard?
Waste of space?
Not even close to being as much of a waste of space as this pointless and mean-spirited comment of yours. Honestly, why bother? You don't like Supertramp, fine, move on, find another thread, start one about something you like.
And, in conclusion: Sheesh!
With regard to this comment
Nah. Best leave it.
As has been said before on here many times
It's probably far better to let the stuff you don't like pass by, and post something you do like. I'm finding all the negativity here a little overwhelming.
Completely agree
A simple post of a top song elicits such an angry response.
Truly a bizarre way to react.
Sorry
where was the post? Context? Opinion?
You described
Patrick's post as a "waste of space". I think some of us are disagreeing.
Depends on how you define a post I guess
For me it is simply an entry here and doesn't need to be accompanied by comment or opinion. If you disagree I respect your opinion on the matter.
In Brookster's defence...
I don't detect any anger in his response.
Fair point
For angry read negative.
Oddly and inappropriately aggressive.
Is that normal?
I would refer you to the FAQs
I have not read the FAQs
In that context you made a fair point.
Not sure how many people who post here have ever read the FAQs either.
Still a top song though and I enjoyed hearing it again after many months.
Well, it's not as though he's fat...
no, there's more to it than that.
Despite the rather disingenuous comments above, Patrick, your posting cheered me up no end. Have some Rudy.
Disingenuous?
Me?
Care to clarify?
I like it
It's a good song. Good tune, chords, and lyrics, and a distinctive sound. The only down side is it maybe carries on a bit longer than it needs to.
Never seen the video before.
Mrs Cues was a big fan of the "Tramp"
In her nubile days. I could hum a few of their tunes, but wasn't a huge admirer. Neverthless, she fetched me along to see Roger Hodgson in Glasgow a few weeks ago. He played a lot of old and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Not to everyones cup of tea, but neither is it film of public kitten executions.
It is musical entertainment. Sense of proportion please.
Did someone mention the Kitty Stomper?
public kitten executions...
Saw them at the Roxy in '77.
Touche
Turtle.
Super
An ex-girlfriend put "It's Raining Again" on a compilation CD for me - I love it!
She wasn't much of a girlfriend, but I never seem to get a lot.
Bullied
If songs went to school, this one would be bullied by bad boys.
Did Someone Say School
now thats more like it
I remember this being the record of choice for hifi shops to demonstrate their wares from the more ear-bleeding end of the spectrum.
Ahhh... feel the love for the Tramp...
My efforts here in spreading word of their greatness seem to have been in vain.
I know they do have a couple of fans here, and I know who you are. Keep the faith brothers...
Love 'em
Although, as said above, without Hodgson they're a bit like the Stones without Mick or Keith.

Logical Song
I used to have it on a 45 as a kid. Loved it then, rather like it now.
Thanks, Patrick (again)
am I right in thinking
that the sax solo was recorded in a toilet? I seem to recall an OGWT clip of them in the studio extolling the virtues of the ambient sound in the bog
Once upon a time....
.....this old blog was small enough to identify and love the prejudices of the regulars. So, for old times sake, Patrick, once more with feeling, and love....... Fuck off with yer execrable supertramp claptrap. (It would be sin for me not so to say)
Smileys optional.
Excellent post, sir!
And may I say how wonderful it is to hear your scorn for my beloved Supertramp once more!

Excellent
I am the same with ELO. Bloody ridiculous band. I love them.
Worried, very worried.....
Mr Blue Sky came on the wireless recently and I, horrifyingly, found myself appreciating (NOT aka liking,I hope, please God) the way it was all put together. Am I losing it?
Have you ever heard their version of...
Apropos of nothing
other than I sense your thrust.
Good, innit?
Nah...
Jackie Leven's version is better.
Try this, Doug
Yep...
And there's a version by Jackie Leven that you might like even more.
Oh come on Archie..
What's wrong with trying to be polite?
You don't get the visual or aural clues with posts that would otherwise accompany a chat in the pub. I read your post as "nah, you're wrong, I'm right".
That may not have been what you meant but given how chippy things have been getting round here lately the same point, phrased differently invites a different form of response.
Nothing wrong at all...
with politeness, One of the things I like about this site.

Not true I'm afraid
I just commented on how much I seem to irritate you and vice versa.
No mention of deliberately starting rows.
Final final words...
I was referring to the other poster who was wanting to bet with archie about getting a reaction from me.
Apologies if I misrepresented you and perhaps I've taken wrong the unpleasant tweets aimed at myself and "My American Mate".

Twitter
You on Twitter, Five? What's yer handle?
Twitter conspiracies? Really?
This is all so not cool.
Conspiracies?
Nah.
Personally, I decided to draw a line under all this 'clique' stuff when I saw the Mucca Mad Boys on TV and drew too many uncomfortable parallels. Grown men in gangs - not a good look.

Life's too short
Life's too short for it to matter, really. Certainly it's a ridiculous record that a lot of people like, myself included.
Casual fan of Supertramp
Crime of the Century was a big favourite of mine when it came out all those years ago. Hide in Your Shell still gets me singing along badly enough to set the dogs howling.
you can tell me to f**k off later.
about what time ? I've emailed/Pm'ed/texted you with a F*** Off before i do it on here. Is that Ok ?
Good to see you got Retropath2 back.
doesn't get any better than this
Say wot you want about Supertramp
and I personally think they are wonderful and vastly underated, but they ain't half good at forecasting the weather....
The lost Marvel hero
Supertramp? Backwards 7 can you give us a story?
.
.
I can't give you a Supertramp...
but I can deliver a soupçon of Super-Grover.
Supertramp....
or Rapper Smut in an anagram world
You can tell me to f**k off later
TMFTL
Great song, great album
and yes; gr...eh, really rather good band.
But I am amazed that people still go and see them live.

I would have no wish to see the Tramp live in 2011...
They were never exactly 'animated' on stage and their interaction with the audience seemed very awkward. But when i saw them in 1983 they were great, despite the lack of rock n' roll histrionics. Sometimes it's enough to hear a bunch of songs you love played exceptionally well.
a better selection - hide in your shell
a lot of Supertramp was pretty lame especially after the first few albums and the logical song fits that category for mine.
Crime of the Century , produced by Ken Scott was pretty damn good. I recall it often being played in hi fi shops when sales people wanted to impress customers with a sound system.
I think this song still holds up.
What do you call a vagrant with X-Ray vision?
.
Derek?
...
Allm I can add
is my favourite Harry Hill joke
I saw in the street, a terrible sight, an old man in ragged clothes standing with his palm outstretched. And he was singing 'when i was young it seemed that life was so wonderful, a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.'
I went up to him and said 'Supertramp' and he said 'thanks very much, i do my best'
That is...
the best joke I've ever heard.
This lot once opened for Supertramp
They were pretty fine:
Is it just me...
or did Supertramp nick all their ideas from Jellyfish?
Yeah - it's just me, isn't it.
(Coat, taxi, tears, etc.)
