Here's some Rush... you can thank me later.

Probably the most eloquent lyric on the subject of rock music itself, and a mighty fine song to start the weekend with:

That is the quickest up arrow I've ever given...
before even reading the text of the thread.
Here's some choice Rush-related clips:
glittering prizes and endless compromises
shatter the illusion of integrity, yeah!
Up arrow awarded
whispers - not even seen the clip yet as I'm at work, but I do love Rush.
Would you believe that there are people on this list who don't care for the Holy Trinity. I know!
"You don't know Rush?"
Are you ready to get your world rocked?
Nice!
Good to see Geddy using his Wal. But that hair...
Great band
They actually put on a show (look at how they occupy the whole stage), and their ability to make so much noise as a three-piece is fantastic. To me, Spirit of Radio marked a turning point, where they started to bring in commercial influences, and proves they were listening to a wide range of music.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music
One certainly does.
Don't get it
They fall right into my 'well you can't like everything' bag.
I like the sound of that bag
How big is it? Satchel? Suitcase? Or Lady Gaga going on holiday?
[please note: comment made without sarcasm, I genuinely love the idea of the 'WYCLE bag']
and another in similar vein
can I thank you now?
thank you
Alex Lifeson
is a fabulous guitarist overall but - and I do realise this is probably heretical - am I the only one to find a lot of his solos sound like the aural eqivivalent of a two year old with crayons? Spirit of Radio is a good example of him playing great stuff all the way through to the solo, where upon he just does apparently random unpleasant squealing...
"aural equivalent of a two year old with crayons"
Have to say I agree with you there. I'm struggling to think of any Rush toon where I find myself eagerly anticipating the solo.
One persons "Eloquent lyric" is
... another person ludicrously pretentious lyric, it seems.
Pffft!
Spirit of Radio doesn't even come within spitting distance of being *ludicrously* pretentious.
Ok it pains me to quote this, but ...
"Glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity" .. c'mon!
At worst
you could argue it's slightly pretentious. It's certainly not ludicrously so.
I was probably 15 when I first heard that lyric
and at that age I remember thinking .. "Ok f**k this, Its back to Motorhead for me."
Personally I think that lyric, stands on its own in the vast canon of Rock, as one of the most pretentious ever to have been penned.
Then you, Sir,
are listening to the wrong stuff.
