Here Comes Geordie
Posted by Andrew2 on 6 December 2010 - 3:38am.
This came up on the shuffle today - Richard Thompson from Dream Attic - his "pop" at Sting. A wonderful melody wrapped around a truly awful lyric. For one artist to be so - so - "nasty" about another just seeems plain wrong.
A sample -
And here comes Geordie went to buy a hat
Geordie says" my head wont fit in that"
Its so swollen, much to my surprise
They're all to small, theres nothing on my size
And here comes geordie acting in a play
He's no Gielgud or Olivier
Stiff as cardboard isnt it a drag
cant act his way out of a paper bag
Looking forward to the reply track on the next Sting album -"Jealous folk singers dont sell many records"

Thompson's got form:
See also
'Dear Janet Jackson' and 'Madonna's Wedding'. I really don't like this side of Thompson, an artist whom I revere more than any other. These songs don't some across as witty or satirical, just mean-spirited.
having read that lyric
'artless wanker' is what came to my mind. And I hate Sting. How disappointing.
Better with music
The lyrics fit well with the sea shanty-like tune, I think.
Clive Gregson BFF?
I seem to remember reading that the Pal in 'Put It There Pal' is Clive Gregson.
Is that right?
I believe so
Gregson reviewed "Mirror Blue" unfavourably if I recall correctly, especially "Fast Food" (though I can have a guilty arf to the line "Water down the ketchup, easier to pour on. Pictures on the register in case you're a moron")
Still, as I type, I'm playing the live "Night Comes In" off Guitar/Vocal which is utterly thrilling, and if that weren't enough, "Calvary Cross" is immediately afterward. If you want to hear someone in the thrall of their muse, these tracks are a fine example.
He does have form...
There was a period when every RT album and concert had at least one Very Silly song, not necessarily an ad hominem attack. Examples would be Psycho Street, Fast Food, My Daddy Is A Mummy, etc etc. Some of them are funny the first time, most pall quickly. As far as the Kenny G song is concerned, I actually like it; it may make a difference that when he introduced it in concert there was quite a long preamble, explaining what Mr G had done that so riled him (and Pat Metheny). His anger is real, and the song works for me, on a bilious level which is perhaps not very admirable, but there we are.
I think it highly unlikely
that RT is jealous of Sting.
Not that I believe him
but RT claims that it's not about Sting (see bottom of thread on link)

And this one
"I can see why people think this is about Sting, but it is mere coincidence. I wrote the song about another person, who mortally insulted a good friend of mine, and deserves to be publicly flogged. So let's end all this Sting speculation. "

Which makes me think it is about Sting but that RT has his reasons...
If not Sting
Then who?
Robson Green?
Dear me
I'm sure Richard Thompson will be embarrassed in a few years when he's left school. Oh wait...
He's composing a new one at this very moment...
Lady Gaga's music makes my ears go "AAAARRGHH!"
Whether I'm ironing my beret or waxing the car
An autotuned nightmare in a dressing up box
Oh lord won't someone make this nightmare stop
How my heart doth sing at a Gershwin couplet
But now all we've got is an irksome muppet
Whose more au fait with a flaming corset
Than a modal scale or a canny crotchet
I'd pay a pretty penny to make her go away
That ghastly noise is fair ruining my day
Why I'd rather be practicing a jig from Kilkenny
Or penning a tribute to Sandy Denny
In an ideal world
You'd be on the panel in That's Life with Keiran Prenderville and Richard Stilgoe
He's just done a new verse...
So as I'm kneeling in the general direction of Mecca
Whilst the gramophone spins some Chick Webb on Decca
I turn my thoughts to the words of the prophet
Who will surely tell her to put a sock in it.
Hats Off
to that man. Loved it.
Patrick you actually sound like
RT and I cant even hear your voice. Wonderful.
Must say I am a huge fan of Richard but strangely don't play his solo albums as frequently as some by artists I am less fond of. My overriding preference is still for his stuff with Linda. Don't think there is anything wrong with taking a pop at Sting - it's his right to do whatever he pleases but the lyrics are pretty banal. Definitely the weakest track on Dream Attic so it hasn't done him any favours. He is much more suited to a song like 'A brother slips away' which is excellent.
If RT says it is
then it is.
And Patrick? Superb... have an up... Steve Turner is spot on... can hear RTs voice!
I like it
One of the best on Dream Attic, for my money. I suspect that - as his blog post indicates - there is some 'history' here.
