Help The Luddite - HDTV
Posted by Brianr on 12 July 2010 - 8:12pm.
I have a HD TV (Panasonic without built in Freesat) I have a Sky plus box but begrudge paying them the subs for HDTV? So what's the best value for money option to view HDTV with the best content for us cheapos who are a bit slow on the uptake? Any recommendations...?

I bought a Humax Freesat
receiver for the world cup and the difference in the picture is striking. There are only two channels at the moment but BBC 1 HD is launching in the autumn and I am sure more will follow.
Thanks
Is BBC1 HD not on already then? Which two channels do you get?
BBC HD
is on there now, which is a smorgasbord of programs from across the BBC. When BBC1 HD launches BBC HD will show the best bits from the other channels.
Dare I suggest
a blue ray dvd player and then join a film rental service. At least until more channels are available. They're less than £60 on Richer Sounds now (other retailers are available but Richer Sounds have always been very good in my opinion).

Not much of a film buff
To be honest but the footy and nature stuff on the BBC would be good in HD I reckon. I suppose BBC4 documentaries are all non HD especially the music ones (lucky if some of the footage I like isn't black and white never mind HD!)
Seriously. Remember the old
Seriously. Remember the old contrast button? We're being sold it back. Turn it right up and THAT'S HD.
Ten quid a month
The Sky HD package is actually well worth £10 a month. I was also not sure about paying more subscription money on top, but I'd bought the HD TV, surround sound system etc, so thought I'd give it a go.
It's worth it just for Sky Arts HD, FX HD and the BBC channel, plus the cricket and football on Sky Sports.
Seconded.
Pay the tenner. It's worth it.
What's the minimum possible total damage for
Sky HD ? Assume I have a communal Sky dish and an HD TV but need everything else.
If any of y'all have a
Freesat recorder I'd be most curious to know how you like it. I am tempted by the Panasonic HD/Blu-Ray ones as I'd like to be able to take Blu Ray recordings to the FPOs to play on her player. It's a Pioneer though, and first compatibility test thanks to a dealer wasn't encouraging, but I hope to get it sorted one of these days.
