Help! Romantic lyrics required

bixieface's picture

I'm due to get married next month (freedom curtailment ahoy! I've already had the "why do you need anymore DVDs, you have enough" conversation) and I'm looking for classic romantic lyric quotes to display. Any suggestions gratefully recieved...

Being Married Is Good.

This may be a controversial view here, but I am approaching our 20th Wedding Anniversary with joy in my heart.

I'll think of some lyrics later, but I wanted to stand up and represent !!

Don't get me wrong...

...I am quite up for the idea.

Cheers anyway!

Hovis Presley

I Rely On You

I rely on you
like a Skoda needs suspension
like the aged need a pension
like a trampoline needs tension
like a bungee jump needs apprehension
I rely on you
like a camera needs a shutter
like a gambler needs a flutter
like a golfer needs a putter
like a buttered scone involves some butter
I rely on you
like an acrobat needs ice cool nerve
like a hairpin needs a drastic curve
like an HGV needs endless derv
like an outside left needs a body swerve
I rely on you
like a handyman needs pliers
like an auctioneer needs buyers
like a laundromat needs driers
like The Good Life needed Richard Briers
I rely on you
like a water vole needs water
like a brick outhouse needs mortar
like a lemming to the slaughter
Ryan's just Ryan without his daughter
I rely on you

can we have a default posting

for inappropriate wedding songs ie.

Yes

I was thinking of starting my speech (like someone else I heard about) with "welcome to my first marriage..."

good idea?

0
bixieface | 18 August 2009 - 10:42pm

or "starter marriage" might be good

a friend raise eyebrows recently by referiing to her beau as "her present boyfriend".

0
Chris G | 18 August 2009 - 10:45pm

I was once

at a wedding where the groom was getting married for the fourth (!) time.

The Best Man, and he really must have been the grooms best friend and who is currently a left wing MP - not that that is relevant to the story, started his speech with the phrase "as I was so rudely interrupted.... twice."

That particular marriage lasted 9 months.

It might be a brave choice..

Waste of 2 grand on a photographer then. Christ!

A Man Is In Love

by The Waterboys

----------------------

A man is in love, how do I know?
He came and walked with me, and he told me so
In a song he sang, and then I knew
A man is in love with you

A man is in love, how did I hear?
I heard him talk too much whenever you're near
He whispered your name when his eyes were closed
A man is in love and he knows

A man is in love, how did I guess?
I figured it out while he was watching you dress
He'd give you his all, if you'd but agree
A man is in love and he's me

0
Johan | 18 August 2009 - 11:20pm

friends wedding

I sang that for the first dance at friend's wedding. Bit of a surprise for me because I was only due to play along with the band (who didn't know the song). I changed the last line to "it's Simon" and it fitted the occassion (if not the rhyme). Lovely song.

Getting married was the best thing I ever did - I recommend it.
Mind you I intend to only do it once - unlike my mother who managed 4 times. Must have liked wedding cake.

One of my favourites

Sebastien Tellier - La Ritournelle

Oh nothing’s gonna change my love for you
I wanna spend my life with you
So we make love on the grass under the moon
No one can tell, damned if I do
Forever journey on golden avenues
I drift in your eyes since I love you
I got that beat in my veins for only rule
Love is to share, mine is for you

First Rule Of Love by Del Amitri

You’ll get hooked, you’ll get drugged
She’ll be your essence she’ll be your blood
And you’ll want her so much but you’ll never get enough
And that’s the first rule of love

She’ll smell so sweetly in the morning
She’ll make you feel so good inside
And you’ll want her so much you’ll give everything else up
And that’s the first rule of love

You’ll grow comfortable together
You’ll start to fit like hand and glove
And then you’ll start to hate the men she used to dream of
And that’s the first rule of love

You’ll miss her madly, when you’re apart
Love is like gravity holding down your heart

You’ll grow envious and bitter
She’ll be enquiring and concerned
And you’ll feel so close to her but never close enough
To get past the first rule of love

And with the awkwardness of strangers
You will finally give up
No exceptions to the first rule of love

Let's Get Married - The Proclaimers

We’ve been, going together
Too long to be vague
When there’s something to say
If it’s not now, then it’s never
So I’ll say it straight out
’cos I have no doubt, no doubt

Let’s get married
I love you and I want to stay with you
Let’s get married
Have kids and grow old and grey with you
Let’s get married
Hold hands, walk in the park
You can get a cat as long as it barks

We know, other people
Who drifted apart
Who broke each others hearts
But we ain’t other people
So we’ll do things our way
We’re gonna be o.k.
We’re gonna be more than o.k.

Let’s get married
We’re ready for tying the knot
Let’s get married
Set the seal on the feelings we’ve got
Let’s get married
We can make each other happy or we can make each other blue
Yeah, it’s just a piece of paper but it says I love you
For the good times
For the days when we can do no wrong
For the moments when we think we can’t go on
For the family
For the lives of the children that we’ve planned
Let’s get married
C’mon darlin’, please take my hand

And I’ll be the one
Who’s by your side
I’ll be the one
Still taking pride
When we’re old if they ask me
How do you define succes?
I’ll say,
You meet a woman
You fall in love
You ask her and
She says yes

Let’s get married
I love and I want to stay with you
Let’s get married
Have kids and grow old and grey with you
Let’s get married
Hold hands when we walk in the park
All right you can get a cat just as lang as it barks
For the good times
For the days when we can do no wrong
For the bad times
For the moments when we think we can’t go on
For the family
For the lives of the children that we’ve planned
Let’s get married
C’mon darlin’, please take my hand

That old rascal Lou

Think It Over by Lou Reed:

"Waking, he stared raptly at her face
On his lips, her smell, her taste
Black hair framing her perfect face
With her wonderful mind and her incredible grace

And so, he woke, he woke her with a start
To offer her his heart
For once and for all, forever to keep
And the words, that she first heard him speak
Were really very sweet
He was asking her to marry him, and to

Think it over
Baby, think it over
Think it over
Baby, why don't you think it over

She said, somewhere, there's a faraway place
Where all is ordered and all is grace
No one there is ever disgraced
And everyone there is wise and everyone has taste

And then she sighed, well la-dee-dah-dee-dah
You and I have come quite far
And we really must watch what we say
Because when you ask for someones heart
You must know that you're smart
Smart enough to care for it, so I'm gonna

Think it over
Baby, think it over
Think it over
Baby, Im gonna think it over"

I suppose I could also go with "Perfect Day", but I've never been convinced he wasn't singing it to his girlfriend, Heroin.

Great Expectations - Elbow

And if it rains all day
Call on you I'll call on you
Like I used to
Slide down beside and wrap you in stories
Tailored entirely for you
I'll remind you
We exchanged a vow
I love you I always will

A call girl with yesterday eyes
Was our witness and priest
Stockport supporters club kindly provided a choir
Your vow was your smile
As we move down the aisle
Of the last bus home
And this is where I go

Actually, Elbow have a whole stack: also see The Everthere or (of course) One Day Like This. Hm - perhaps I should have a go at the 10-track compilation thread...
Just when it rains

Blinking and stoned
Rain in your hair
You only smoke ‘cause it's something to share
Singing bring on the night
To have and to hold
The sodium light turning silver to gold

Spitfire thin and strung like a violin
I was
Yours was the face with a grace
From a different age
You were the sun in my Sunday morning
You were the sun in my Sunday morning
Telling me never to go
So I'll live on the smile
And move down the aisle
Of the last bus home
And if you're running late
This is where I'll go
Know I'll always wait

This

my favourite song of the last ten years, means so much to me, love lost and all that (wipes mist from eyes)

The Postal Service - "Such Great Heights"

I am thinking it's a sign
That the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images
And when we kiss
They're perfectly aligned

And I have to speculate
That God himself did make us
Into corresponding shapes
Like puzzle pieces from the clay

Good luck!

From the Greatest Love Song Ever. The Word says so

And I need you more than want you
And I want you for all time

Go on. Say that in public dry-eyed.

Seconded

Couldn't sleep last night and in the middle of the night thought I should suggest this. Spot on. My favourite image(?) is the singing in the wires, though.

The great Jim Webb

"Wichita Lineman"

yes! yes! I had already selectd that one. The most romantic quote of all time I would wager. Great minds, etc, etc, ad nauseum...

Stacey Earle

I think Lucky You, Mark Stuart, to have someone write a song like this for you -

Silly You

Where do you go?
Why won't you say?
Do you need to be alone?
Well, I guess that's ok

Don't take your troubles
You leave some behind
I'll hold them for you
You know I don't mind

Well, what is yours is mine
And when we have a little time
We can sort it out
Why, there's a lot of little things
That we can do without
But I don't want you to ever think
That I could live without you

I think you worry too much
You're so afraid our love won't be enough
But that's you, silly silly you
Well, look at you, you always think you have to just be so tough
You even worry about the little stuff
Silly you

There's a lot of little things
That we can do without
We're gonna sit down sometime
We're gonna sort 'em all out
But I don't want you to ever think
I could live without you

You know I love you more everyday
Oh now tell me how's it feel to be loved that way
Yeah, you, hey there, lucky you
Are you listening to me
Do you hear what I'm trying to say
I wouldn't have any other way

Fornication!

Fornication like this, I'd just like to say that if she looks as half as good as her Mother does now, then I'll be twice as likely to stay with her. I hear that her Mother is so house proud that when her father gets up to sleepwalk she has the bed made by the time he gets back. Of course, I decided to marry her after she went to a beauty parlour and got a mud pack. For two days she looked really nice, then the mud fell off. She's a classy girl though, at least all her tattoos are spelt right...

Thanks to Chic Murray for most of that.

Found - The Beloved

I've always thought these lyrics rather touching, and the band appropriately named:

Well, tell me one thing, is there madness in this reason?
And tell me something that I never knew before
The consequences of my actions aren't confusing
They're just wanting the direction
That I've never had before

I was happy, now I'm walking on the water
I was laughing, now I'm floating in the air
'Cause I found you

These gut reactions are the best thing you can go by
Premonitions are the second, that's for sure
I'm caught by your eyes, they just surprised me
Overpowered me
I stand here waiting in the calm before the storm

Your smile is like the ocean, your kiss the seven seas
Your eyes like magic potions, they just enrapture me
I promise my affection for all eternity
You are my resurrection, you mean the world to me

Good luck Bixie, hope you have a wonderful day, and indeed marriage. I'm getting hitched myself in October - aint love grand!

0
cathtrish | 19 August 2009 - 1:46pm

Just pick a few images from your own life

and put in verse form.
E.g.

You're the tuner on my guitar
You're the engine in my car
You're the window in my shed
You light the path on which I tread

You're the froth upon my beer
You're the reason that I'm here
You're the cement in my sand
You're the gold ring on my hand

It doesn't have to be W B Yeats. It will sound more personal and genuine than just quoting some lyrics. Worth trying out anyway. Run it past a close friend first.

Sky Blue And Black

The above post reminded me of these lines from Jackson Browne:

You're the colour of the sky
Reflected in each storefront window pane
You're the whispering and the sighing
Of my tyres in the rain
You're the hidden cost and the thing that's lost
In everything I do
Yeah and I'll never stop looking for you
In the sunlight and the shadows
And the faces on the avenue

I wouldn't say this song is wedding material at all; but these are some of the most impossibly romantic and evocative lines...

Lost Love Lyrics?

No one does them better than RT.
Excerpts from "When The Spell Is broken":
Now your handing her that same old line
It's just straws in the wind this time
When love has died
And there's none starry eyed
No kiss
No tears
No farewell souveniers
Not even a token
When the spell is broken
OR
How long can the flame of love remain
When you curse and fight
And never see like
Or hear like spoken
When the spell is broken
You can't cry if you don't know how
When the spell is broken.

We have all been there, chaps and chapessess
