Help, Part III

Fraser Lewry's picture

With The Massive so successful in identifying a track heard by pulseczar in the Glasgow branch of Fopp, and a jazz piece that's been bugging Declan since 1974, I've decided to raise the bar a little.

It's some time in 1987 or 1988, I'd guess, and I hear a folk version of Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves playing in a record shop in London's Camden Town. The lead vocal is female, it's a wee bit hey-nonny-nonny, and its identity has been bothering me ever since.

Any suggestions?

A head scratcher, that one

But Vikki Carr did a version, late '70's, I think. Ney-nonny-nonny she ain't but you never know.

There are about 10 versions on Spotify

....is it one of those?

Nope

There is a folk version on there - by Dervish - but it's from 2007 and it's more Celtic than the version I remember.

Nope

Too American, and a decade too late.

Lick The Tins?

1987 or 1988 - tick
Novelty cover version - tick
Female lead vocal - tick
A "bit hey-nonny-nonny" - tick

Lick The Tins (had a minor hit in 1986 with "Can't Help Falling In Love") tick all the boxes for the artist, but a quick Google can't find GT&T in their repertoire... any chance it's them?

No

I saw Lick The Tins (they played at my college) and it wasn't them. And it wasn't really a "novelty" cover - it was played very straight.
