Help needed - iPod speakers

Norwegian Blue's picture

I'm looking for a christmas present for my 11-year-old niece (pretty sure this site is way off her radar), who recently became the very proud owner of an iPod Nano. I'm thinking of buying her a docking station with speakers. After a quick search round town I'm thinking of buying one of these:

JBL Onstage Micro

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000JVRQI4/ref=s9_sima_gw_s0_p23_i1?p...

or this boombox from Sony

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-ZSS4IP-Boombox-iPhone-Black/dp/B001GNC7RE/ref...

JBL looks coolest, Sony looks sturdiest. Has anyone got any experience with one of these, or do you know a better alternative? My budget is £150.

Very good sound off this. I was dubious when I received it as a gift but I use it all the time.

Lucky niece,

best I got from relations was a box of biscuits, and once a ten pound gift voucher

If you were lucky :-)

She's an only child and my only niece so I guess she's a bit spoilt.

Have you consulted

the parents?

They might prefer something under-powered and tinny...

I asked a similar question a while ago....

...and was advised by the Massive to buy the Klipsch IGroove. I did so and have had no cause to regret my decision.

Klipsch iGroove HG

We have this one in the bedroom. Excellent sound and it looks far more stylish than many out there.

Didn't see David posting as I wrote my recommendation. I share an audio experience with the Gods !

I bought the original JBL Onstage

I still use it and I think it's great. This must have been in 2006. It sounds excellent, looks good, is sturdy - it's used when I travel - and, if necessary, it can play at extremely high levels with little distortion. It has vents, like full-sized speakers and at full chat you can feel the air move, which is amusing. The only drawback is the huge and heavy transformer, but that may not be true for this model. I would definitely buy another, but mine is still in excellent health.

seconded...

I have one and it's got a lovely sound out of it

So did I

I bought one in 2005 and it has been great . I even take it to hook up to the mac when giving talks and it plays a decent size room very clearly the transformer/plug combo is a little bulky .

Try These....

I've had these for a while. Bout 50 notes off amazon. Sound great, gonna use them for the hall where my daughters 3rd birthday party will be held. They're more than powerful enough. Recommended.

Klipsch

as per Mr Hepworth very good (my son's Christmas present last year). The Logitech Pure Fi Anywhere's are great if you want to take them into other rooms with out wires (rechargeable battery is built in) Klipsch sounds a little better I reckon but Logitech's are great for holidays and awaydays (and BBQ's).

I recommend...

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/audio-output/i-want-it-iw900-2-1-ipod/

I've one of these. Sounds fantastic. I've also an older smaller cheaper speaker dock by the same people that I bought a couple of years ago that sounds really good, so I'm assuming(wrongly probably) that they would appear to be a brand to trust...

JBL OnStage Micro

Picked up a JBL OnStage Micro reduced to around £34 in Currys the other week, takes batteries or mains and sounds great, has a remote control, and it's perfect for a small shelf space.

The slightly bigger one was only £39. They were both near the tills on an end-of-line-bargains shelf.

Also

Step-son has Altec Lansing IM500, sounds great and is rechargeable, but had to get it replaced as the dock worked loose and snapped off!

Spending a lot could be risky if almost the entire unit is robust, but the small plug that you dock into turns out to be a bit flaky. Mind you a lot of them have an additional line input too.

It's funny

but this post has caused me to tot up how many sets of spkrs our 2 iPods are used with:

1. 20 quid airport buy, Creative labs PC spkrs in my gallery flat bedroom-occasional late night use when I don't feel like wearing phones.

2. Pricier $99 souvenir of a US stay, Cambridge Soundworks set
http://www.cambridgesoundworks.com/store/category.cgi?category=mul_spk_c...
in partner's conservatory-great sound for the money but needs a stepdown transformer.

3. Gear 4 set (a street party model of some sort) bundled with new iPod when I bought it at HMV, not bad at all for a tenner in her kitchen ...

4. Teac computer speakers in my office.

5. an Onkyo dock at partners connected to her Arcam amp and B&W speakers.

6. Another impulse buy, tiny travel speakers bought on a plane.

And there'd be a #7 except that my Arcam Solo doesn't work properly with Arcam's own lead-either software or (I suspect) hardware probs--can't be bothered to sort it and am using a Squeezebox instead for now.

Even when one allows for stuff that's being reused that's quite an aftermarket ...will this be the Christmas of the iPod dock (or the feast of St Steve as it's presumably known in John Lewis' AV department)
