help me name my cats

seanioio's picture

Me & the future Mrs seanioio have decided to get some cats & are struggling with the naming! We definitely want names with a music or literary theme but have not agreed on anything yet so the help of the massive would be appreciated.
Originally we were quite keen on Bernard & Hooky as we are both fans of New Order. However, we have put some money down on female cats so the names dont really go! I am keen on Aretha & Martha whereas Belle & Sebastian is the choice for Mrs S.

Anyone any ideas?

Deffo Girls?

We have two boy cats.

The big fluffy ginger one is called Clarence (after Clemons) and the little black one is Angus (guess!).

If female felines, Twiggy and Neneh are pretty cool cat names...

Dogs, however, must be named after famous footballers. Our old alastian was a fantastic Pele. Looked just like him too!

We had a minor argument once

over a hypothetical name for a hypothetical dog (that we don't have).

I wanted to call it Gudni, after Gudni Bergsson. The missus wasn't having any of it.

Can I put in a plea

for Mr Squiggle? I know its not a famous musical or literary figure (he's a character from an old Australian kids TV show-has a pencil for a nose) but its the name of my beautiful old cat who got killed by a dingo on my birthday last year. I had rescued him from a basket of kittens when I was a young vet and he accompanied me like a dog to work each day. He was sleek and black and for 12 years he was my sentinel. The world would be a better place with another Mr Squiggle in it. His soul-mate was a tabby called Oscar, who also was sadly eaten by a dingo a few months before Squiggle. There are, however, many cats called Oscar in this world (One is perched at my feet as I type).

Otherwise, can I please hand on a bit of advice I used to give my clients when it came to naming pets? When you think you've got a name, imagine yourself walking up the street at midnight calling it at the top of your lungs. Because it's going to happen one day, and you can feel like a right twat if you've chosen poorly.

By Proxy

I'd love to have a couple of cats but live in a second floor flat. You would make me very happy if you fulfilled my personal ambition by proxy and named your cats Tufnell and (St)Hubbins.

I've never had a cat.

Aww, poor me. But if I did, I would call him Dee Dee. So, I suggest any two of the Ramones - Tommy & Dee Dee ? Joey & Dee Dee ?

You can't stop the boy

from being skin and bone
From naming his cat Dee Dee Ramone
Hanging around with the Boomtown Rats
No you can't stop the boy from acting like that

(Chorus)

I don't know if that's where the idea came from, but here are Blast Furnace & The Heatwaves

My great auntie

My great auntie always named her pets after well-known authors / poets. She called one of her cats Pushkin, which I thought was very clever when I was 9. (To be honest I still do now and I'm 43!)

So how about, Pushkin and Alex, given his full name was Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin? I know he was a bloke and the cats are female, but the names still work for me...

Zola - no, not that one...

My sister tried the same approach, naming her new cat after her favourite author, Emile Zola.

Unfortunately, a certain South African runner suddenly came to prominence shortly after she named the cat. My sister spent the next few years wearily saying, "No, not after Zola Budd" (and muttering "peasant" under her breath).

Me, I named mine Flossie, after a hat which my Mum had (which was in turn named after my uncle's cat, which it resembled). It suits her (the name, not the hat) better than my original suggestion, which was ... Milly Molly Mandy (no imagination).

How about

Missie ? Sounds like a cats name, named after famous female rapper; and there's Bob at the door, asking for his nephew.

Hmmm

If I lost all reason and got 2 cats I might name them Strat and Tele, or possibly Les and Paul. Or Lowell and George.

Eff and Katz

...then when you go on holiday, you can phone the cattery and ask if they can take Eff'n'Katz off your hands for a couple of weeks.

Jazz men

We got three kittens earlier this year. We spent ages discussing names. We had all sorts of themed ideas to link the three. Authors, Scottish islands, film stars among them were all considered and rejected. Once we knew they were all male, my inspired idea of the blessed Evertonian trinity of Kendall, Ball and Harvey was as successful as a Louis Saha shot is this season.
In the end we decided to go along with jazz musicians. The problem then was then deciding between the names of those we really like (my immediate short list was Miles, Lester and Dexter) and those in our estimation deemed to be sufficiently feline.
We settled on Humphrey, Hoagy and Benny. There was a big debate over Benny because Mrs P wanted to go for an alliterative trio and favoured Herbie. I can't stand the name Herbie. I've always wondered why Mr Hancock has stuck with it and hasn't changed it by deed poll. A foolish prejudice, but there it is.
So going along with this theme there are plenty of females to choose from. If one of them had been female there is a good chance she'd have been Ella.
I also liked Benny because of the Top Cat connection. The smallest one consequently had that soubriquet applied to him. As it turns out that was a mistake because now they've reached 10 months he's grown to be the biggest.

2

Lady and Gaga

But if her career nose-dives any time soon you might have to explain it to everyone. So probably not a good idea.

How about Sonia and Sinitta?

Always thought if I had a cat

I'd name it "Frankenstein" after the line in "Another Saturday Night"

"Instead of being my deliverance
She had a strange resemblance
To a cat named Frankenstein".

Not really a gurlycat name, though...

Many thanks for all of the ideas, very kind of you all.

Mrs S is very keen on Penny & Lucy whilst I am now a big fan of Ella & Billie (Billie has the added bonus of Lady Day as an alternative!) We will agree on something soon I am sure :)

and after all of that we

and after all of that we ended up going for Peggy & Betty after the characters in Mad Men. We did justify them with some tenuous music links. Peggy (Sue) & (Black) Betty (Bam-ba-lam.

Cheers for your help, Penny & Lucy was a favourite of our friends.

Nice choices

The only problem there is, inevitably some idiot is going to come round and in a Michael Crawford voice, try to entice the cat with a …. I can't even bring myself to type it.
You might also get an Archer's fan calling the other with a "Pugguy" a la Jack Woolley.

These are the things you have to take into consideration.

Two of ours three have been having fun with the Xmas tree tonight.
