Hellooooooo?

DrJ's picture

There has been no movement on the site this morning. No new threads! Is there anybody out there?

On a slightly related note, isn't it next Monday that all the newspapers run the annual story that "it's the most depressing day of the year... this day is the day that most people take off as a sickie... "

And finally, after a weekend of listens, the new Vampire Weekend is great.

I think it's today

that is officially the most depressing day of the year which will explain why it's so quiet around here.

Blue Monday

Is today apparently.

That

explains it. The lowering pall of gloom hanging over Slotbadger towers this morning is dark and ominous.

It's oh so quiet,

maybe we're all in a state of shock now the snows gone.It feels like the years not got going yet.How about Avatar winning best picture at the Globes. The right choice? If not what should have won?I'd have gone for Precious.

Dr Goldacre on Blue Monday

I don't doubt that some of us feel a bit gloomy today (I had to turn the light on at 9.30) but as for the science Dr Goldacre says:

"You're doubtless familiar with the Blue Monday story. "Psychologist" Cliff Arnall has discovered the formula for the saddest day of the year. It's all very sciencey. Except he did it for Sky Travel, through a PR company called Porter Novelli, and they wanted it to be the end of January, just after your first pay cheque arrives, because that's the perfect time to book your summer holiday"

More details on his blog here.

I know there has been a view on this blog that the good doctor perhaps lacks charm, but he's usually right.

Recent research shows.....

.....Jessica Alba has the perfect wiggle.

Yes, Dr Goldacre does come across as a bit humourless in his book "Bad Science" but I think we need people like him to tell us the truth about all the dross that is spoon fed to us as science by the media.

IIRC the "Jessica Alba" and "most miserable day of the year" studies/research(??) were commissioned by companies selling hair gel and holidays. The outcomes of the studies were already known by the companies before the studies took place. They just needed a name and a sciency equation. This isn't science and it's not news...it's simply advertising masquerading as such.

It's not so much how he comes across in his book

that offends me, but how he appears to believe he should be treated by those who wish to deal with him.

Every interview I've read with him, or article about him (including the Word) seems to feel the need to point out how unpleasant he is and list his petty demands and conditions for the interview.

A Foggy Day in London Town

I'm not blue particularly but am feeling a little light in the pocket. It's a long month this one pay-wise so am battening down until the coffers are electronically topped-up.

Saw 'Bee Movie' at the Kid's Club at the cinema yesterday. Very enjoyable. An expected dry turn from Jerry Seinfeld. Sting is in it too, being self-deprecating.

Er, that's it!

It's a beautiful sunny day here in the North East

By far the warmest day of the year so far, no reason to be depressed.
Oh hang on, I've got to go to work in an hour (gloom descends)

Snow gone - were in heaven

Blue Monday, you are joaking. The last two weeks have been a pig - snow, ice, black ice, slush, frozen slush and any combination of that lot. We are now in the normal winter mode , slightly gloomy but not frozen.

The sun has go it's hat on.

Great day today - just been for my daily constitutional without needing a hat for the first time I can remember. The sun is out and I could drive in this morning without having to worry about black ice or snow. Apart from the summer, as long as there's no snow, I think this is my favourite time of the year.

... also, there was a bit of action before your post but it was spam and Fraser was obviously up a few minutes early today as it disappeared just after 7am.

That explains it

I am officially sick today. Whatever it is the doctor says it's cute...so I would stand well back from this posting until further notice.
